Dear Eighth Grade Parents,
As you may know, our eighth grade students are helping to
raise money for the St. Bernard Project
(Information and web site information below).
The eighth graders became invested in this project after
hearing Liz McCartney (2008 CNN Hero of the Year) talk during a collection in
March at BFS about her story and the news about what is happening in New
Orleans now. Liz founded St
Bernard Project as a response to the
devastation caused by hurricane Katrina. We also watched part of Spike Lee’s
documentary, When the Levees Broke, which showed the destruction
of the hurricane and the issues that residents are having trying to move back
to New Orleans.
It is our
school policy that we only ask families to donate to one thing at BFS: the BFS
Annual Fund. We limit our
community service projects to fundraising efforts that involve some kind of
exchange of goods or services such as read-a-thons, bake-sales, dog washing
services, and so on. Recently, students broke up into
small groups during advisory and decided which way their group would like to
raise money. The students were to
create a fundraiser that was fun, small and manageable. Many have chosen ones
that will happen after school or on the weekend.
Please help your child by:
1.
Guiding him/her in doing a fundraising project that is manageable. Keep it
small and simple to implement!
2.
Supporting him/her in completing his/her project by Monday, May 18th.
All finds must be collected by then as well.
3. If
your child is taking pledges, make sure your child carefully records donor
information on the pledge sheet that we provide for them.
4.
Any check your child collects must be made out to St. Bernard Project.
5. Ask your child about the whens, wheres
and hows, to make sure you are
comfortable with his/her plan in terms of
safety, etc.
6. You may suggest to your child that he/she write thank you
letters to donors or to inform donors at a later time of news from the St.
Bernard Project.
If you have questions or would like more information, feel
free to contact either Ed Herzman or Pete Prince about this project.
