A Grand Day in Every Way

by Karen Edelman

On Friday, May 16, over 300 special guests joined our Pre- and Lower school classes for the first ever Grandparents/Grandfriends day at Brooklyn Friends. Our guests traveled from all over to be with the children on this special day—Florida, Maine, Kansas, South Carolina, Texas, West Virginia, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom (just to name a few!).

Starting the day with a breakfast in the school cafeteria, Michael Nill, Head of School, welcomed our special guests, thanking them for being such an important part of the children’s lives and being so invested in their education. The commitment to the kids was truly rewarded as our guests visited in the classrooms, did special art projects with some of our younger students, learned about computer animation with some of our older students, visitied the science lab to find out about the science curriculum, and sat for interviews conducted by the students themselves. The morning was brought to a height with the visit to the all school art show. The guests were overwhelmed by the significance of the efforts of our children in their art work—from paintings and cardboard figures to woodworking and pottery.

As the guests left the building they thanked Michael Nill for this wonderful opportunity to join in this extraordinary day. The comments were consistent—“a fabulous event, we can’t wait for the next one!”
