How do I apply?

No, but you can download the application and other required forms.
 
What are the entry grades at BFS?
Preschool, Kindergarten, 6th and 9th grades
 
What are birthday cutoffs (for preschool, kindergarten and first grade only?
Children in the Preschool 3s and 4s program must be 3 and 4 years old respectively before October 1 in the year they start school. Kindergarten applicants must be 5 years old, and 1st grade applicants must be 6 years old, before October 1st to be considered for admissions.
 
How do I arrange a tour?
Please see the Tour Dates for a complete list of available tours. You must reserve a space on a tour.
 
How long are the tours?
Generally, about 90 minutes.
 
Is an application necessary before I tour the school?
No.  However, if you know you want to apply, fill out the application first, and then go on a tour.
 
Can I receive a tour during my interview?
Because of scheduling constraints, we are unable to tour families during interviews.
 
Can I have an interview immediately following the tour?

No, because the Admissions Directors lead tours as well as conduct interviews.
 
What happens if I am unable to attend a general tour?
If your child is accepted, we will be happy to tour your family during the decision-making time in February.
 
What happens to applications placed on hold?
We will notify you if your application has been placed on hold. If an interview slot becomes available, we will go to our hold file and process the applications in the order in which they were received.

For Middle and Upper School English and Math teacher recommendations, what if the same teacher teaches both subjects?
The teacher should complete both forms and submit to the Admissions office.
 
What admissions test does BFS require?
• Preschool—There is no admissions test.
• Kindergarten to Grade 4—We require the Early Childhood Admissions Assessment from the Educational Records Bureau.
• Grades 5 to 11—The ISEE is preferred. SSAT is also accepted.
 
Are fee waivers available for the ERB and ISEE tests?
Yes, but you have to apply to BFS. In addition, because there is an income cap, you must submit your most recent 1040 as proof of income.  You can obtain a waiver from any independent school to which you are applying.
 
What qualities make a student a good candidate for Brooklyn Friends School?
The school is interested in a candidate whose background and experience demonstrate an ability and willingness to make a positive contribution to the school community and who will actively support the school’s program and values. BFS looks for students with a history of strong academic success.
 
Is there priority consideration in admissions?
Yes.  To receive legacy consideration, qualified students must be:
• Siblings—brother or sister to someone who is currently enrolled in BFS and will be enrolled the following school year.
• Children of alumni—applicants whose parents(s)/guardians(s) graduated from the 12th grade at BFS.
• Children of faculty & staff—applicant’s parent(s)/guardian(s) must be currently employed at BFS.
• Members of the Religious Society of Friends—parent(s)/guardian(s) of the applicant must be members of the New York Quarterly Meeting. Quaker families who are members of other Meetings will be given priority after the members of the NY Quarterly Meeting.
 
Is there an Early Notification program?
Yes, for Preschool, Kindergarten and Grade 1.  Please refer to the Early Option page for more details.
 
How does the waitpool work?
Students who are placed in our waitpool are qualified candidates who have not been accepted because of limited space in the grade level. Should a place become available, the committee will select a waitpool candidate to fill the place based on the needs of the class.
 
If not offered enrollment, will I learn the reasons why?

We are unable to make known the specific reasons that lead us to make admissions decisions.
 
Are there additional required fees beyond tuition?
Our tuition is all-inclusive.  Please see Tuition Schedule for more information.
 
Does BFS have a scholarship program?
We do not offer merit-based scholarships to external candidates.
 
Does BFS have a financial aid program?
Yes, please go to Financial Aid page for more information.
 
How racially and socio-economically diverse is the student body at Brooklyn Friends School?
BFS is actively committed to building and maintaining a racially, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse community. Currently, the percentage of students of color at BFS is 38% and faculty and staff of color is 33%.  About 28% of our students receive financial aid.
 
Does BFS have wheelchair accessibility?
Yes, but it is limited.
 
Where do BFS families live?
Students come from all five boroughs and New Jersey.
 
Does BFS offer transportation?
No; however, we do offer Student Metrocards.
 
What is the class size in each division?
• Preschool -  Typically, there are 15 students in the half day Threes and 15 students in the full day Threes with a head teacher and an assistant teacher.  In Fours, there are 18 students, a head teacher and an assistant teacher.
• Kindergarten to Grade 4—There are 20-22 students per class with a head teacher and an assistant teacher.
• Grades 5 to 8—There are 15-20 students in an academic section.
• Grades 9 to 12—Typically, there are 15 students per class. 
 
In what colleges and universities do BFS students matriculate?

Are there opportunities for international travel?

Yes. Students in 8th through 12th grades have gone to Brazil, England, France, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Russia, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Morocco and Spain.
 
Can BFS issue an I-20 for international students?
Yes, once a student is accepted.
