AM Sports for Grades 5 and 6
The Athletics Department sponsors an early morning sports program for fifth and sixth graders called AM Sports (Athletics in the Morning).

AM Sports runs from 7:15 am to 7:55 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and supports the belief that children should be introduced to a variety of athletic activities as each one contributes to their all round development. AM Sports offers a variety of activities so that children can enjoy a healthy, active life. We provide the building blocks to confidently access any activity as they get older, by equipping them with a solid foundation. Our approach to AM Sports is to teach through the physical and does not focus solely on one particular sport. Everything we do is aimed at developing a child's core physical skills such as: • balance • ball manipulation • coordination • speed

SESSION ONE   Developing fundamental movement & skill    09/20/11-10/27/11
This session is based on a child-centered approach for all children, including those who have experienced difficulty in PE. The program is designed for students to experience success from their individual starting points.

SESSION TWO  Being an effective team player    11/01/11-12/09/11
PE advocates often lay stake to the claim that PE builds teamwork skills. Session two makes sure that the process happens by design, not accident. Skills and concepts such as responding quickly, positive communication, collective responsibility and team unity will be reinforced. We use a broad and balanced menu of team sports, including basketball, soccer, team handball, etc. to deliver this unit.

SESSION THREE, Becoming more skillful    04/12/12-05/17/12
Students will focus on becoming more skillful through a variety of net games including tennis, table tennis, and badminton and striking/fielding games including cricket, baseball, and softball. Learning outcomes will focus on developing increased precision & accuracy while becoming comfortable striking a moving object with an implement (racquet, bat, paddle).

Parents/Guardians must submit a registration/permission form in order for their child to participate:Students should wear suitable clothing and must have sneakers. If your child is interested in participating, please complete the registration form and return it by 9/19/2011.
