The two baseball and two softball teams at Brooklyn Friends have represented the school well in interscholastic competition this spring. While the 7th and 8th grade teams have concluded their seasons, the varsity baseball and softball squads are getting ready for post-season play. There have been several highlights in Panthers play in 2006:
• The Boys Varsity Baseball team played a spectacular game at Keyspan Park in Coney Island on April 17 versus Nazareth Regional High School. The setting was magnificent, the weather wonderful, and the boys gained a win with a score of 14-9. Another notable game was the win over Kew Forest, 4-3. It was an exciting game that saw the school record for strikeouts in a game get set. Artyom Milius pitched a complete game (7 innings) had 18 strikeouts, and picked up his third win of the season. Ripton Rosen had the game winning RBI single in the bottom of the 7th inning to end the game. Another highlight was the boys win over Solomon Schecter. Alumnus Jesse Soll ’95, who was in town from his home base in California, attended the game and took photos of the players (pictured here). Jesse played baseball as a BFS student and is currently studying at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara.
• Girls Varsity Softball, off to an 0-3 start in league play, beat Churchill School 18-3 behind a one hitter pitched by sophomore Jenine Abbassi. Jenine had 10 strike outs and was an offensive star with a home run and four runs scored. Freshman Ellie Williams had a breakout game as the lead-off hitter going 4-4 with two home runs and two singles. Seniors Aliya Shain and Shira Wilkofsky also hit home runs. Barbara von Salis went three for three and caught a masterful game behind the plate. Alexis Carlson, playing second base, had her first varsity hit and stole four bases.
• The MS Boys Baseball team defeated Berkeley Carroll at the beginning of the season. They had their first league win with a 12-6 victory over York Prep and another win, a 7-0 shutout, against Calhoun.
• The MS Girls Softball team defeated Columbia Prep 9-8 in its league opener. They also had a 7-0 shutout against St. Hilda’s and St. Hugh’s.
