Everyone Encouraged to Participate in Family Day of Service, April 8
Saturday, April 8
11 am – 2 pm
In the cafeteria
In his talk with the BFS community on February 16, psychologist Robert Brooks strongly suggested that parents should be involved in “doing good deeds” for their community, and that children should participate with parents starting at an early age. Being able to understand the needs of others is a key to strenthening empathy and resilience in children, teens, and adults. In other words, give a little and get a great deal back.
Brooklyn Friends community members will have an opportunity to do just that on Saturday, April 8, 2006, the fourth annual “Family Day of Service” sponsored by the PAT.
Spend an hour or two working together with your family to benefit our neighbors, our community, and our environment—and have fun while you do it! Service projects will offer opportunities to participate for people of all ages, from preschool through adult:
• Create artwork to send to New Orleans West (the Katrina-displaced K-8 school now in Houston)
• Decorate grocery bags with environmental messages for Earth Day
• Paint flowerpots as gifts for seniors
• Make peace posters for the April 29 Anti-War Demonstration
• Knit blankets for babies with AIDS
• Make Mother’s Day and birthday cards for the elderly and homebound
• Write and decorate cards advocating affordable housing
• Paint a mural in the school’s stroller alleyway
• Rake leaves to spruce up Cadman Plaza Park, in conjunction with Partnership for Parks
