The 2005-06 girls basketball season was both record-setting and historic at Brooklyn Friends. It was thrilling, exciting, and in the end, echoed that well-known television sports phrase, “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” The girls represented the school in an exemplary manner, earning the respect and affection of the entire school community.
BFS had its first ever Junior Varsity squad this year and in Cinderella fashion, the team reached the championship game in the GISAL (Girls Independent Schools Athletic League). Coached by Janet Villas, the JV girls had an 10-6 record. They won a playoff game by a margin of 14 points, but lost one of their top players in that game and finished as the runner-up to UNIS for the championship crown. Thanks and congratulations are due to team members Nishanthy A., Theodora T., Laurice F., Imani H., Sarah H., Thema N., Jazmyne O., Bibi Borthwick, Alex M., Hershley P. and Brittany G.
The Varsity team sustained a 12 game winning streak. They played 20 games overall (league and non-league) and had 16 wins in the regular season before losing 29-25 to Churchill School in the playoffs. The girls played beautifully as a team and exhibited grit, grace, and determination. Congratulations and thanks to team members Shira W., Aliya S., Savannah L., Jenine A., Shelby C., Drew C., Barbara V., Sascha R., Courtni C., and Alexandra E.
