OUR MISSION
Horizons at Brooklyn Friends School is an enrichment program designed to promote the potential of an academically diverse population of children from low-income families. Guided by a professional faculty in a nurturing environment, the program emphasizes academics, the arts, cultural awareness, swimming and social growth. Horizons is committed to the development of the whole child through experiences that enhance self-esteem, build problem solving and critical thinking skills, encourage a life-long interest in learning, expands horizons, and foster awareness of social responsibility.
OUR PROGRAM
Horizons at Brooklyn Friends School currently enrolls students from P.S. 307 and P.S. 287, located in nearby Fort Greene/Vinegar Hill, in a five-week summer enrichment program over an eight-year period. Children have academic classes daily, prepare their own lunch, enjoy weekly field trips, take dance lessons with professionals from the Mark Morris Dance Company and swim lessons with aquatic experts at Long Island University. There are 15 students and two teachers in every class; over time the number of Horizons students will grow to 120, with a grade range from first through eighth. The academic program emphasizes reading, mathematics, and science, while the social component focuses on active listening and community building. |
