OUR MISSION
Horizons at Brooklyn Friends School is an academic enrichment program serving low-income children living in the Downtown Brooklyn area. Our goal is to provide the academic support children need to stay on grade level, while simultaneously offering a rich and diverse enrichment curriculum. Committed to the development of the whole child, our professional faculty engage Horizons students in experiences that enhance self-esteem, build problem solving and critical thinking skills, encourage a life-long interest in learning, and foster awareness of social responsibility.
OUR PROGRAM
Horizons at Brooklyn Friends School currently enrolls students from PS 307, PS 287, PS 67, PS 46 and PS 8 located in nearby Fort Greene/Vinegar Hill, in a six-week summer academic enrichment program. Children accepted into the program in kindergarten remain through eighth grade, with an additional kindergarten class added each summer. A ratio of 15 students to 2 teachers ensures that children get the individualized attention they need to thrive. The weekly schedule includes field trips, dance with teachers from Mark Morris Dance Company, West African drumming, swim lessons with aquatics experts from Long Island University, ceramics, chess, and visual art. Academic programming emphasizes reading, mathematics, and science, while the social component focuses on active listening and community building.
