Head Search Summer Update
LETTER FROM THE HEAD SEARCH COMMITTEE

Dear Members of the Brooklyn Friends School Community:

I write to update you on the Head search process. Summer may at last be here, but the Search Committee is not idle. First, we’d like to thank parents, faculty, and staff who submitted nominations for the advisory councils. The committee has met to review them and is determining next steps, which will likely include additional phone interviews for nominated parents. We will continue working on the composition of the councils during July and August and will announce those who have been selected to serve in September.

Second, our search consultant Clay Stites is already at work talking to prospects and assembling a promising group of candidates. Clay has completed the position profile, which captures what makes BFS unique and the qualities we seek in our next Head. It is an excellent recruiting tool and he will distribute it widely to attract and inform potential candidates. Clay has also placed information about our opening with Friends Council on Education and other independent school networks. The word is out, and there is a high level of interest.

At this point, the field remains wide open. Over the summer, Clay will review all submissions and conduct preliminary interviews with applicants to determine how well each individual matches our needs. In September, he will present a group of candidates to the Search Committee from which we will select eight to ten to pursue. The fall will be a very intense period as the Search Committee interviews initial candidates and narrows the field. After the screening interviews, the Search Committee will decide how many candidates to invite to the school. Depending on the number, we may have both a semi-final and final round of visits or jump straight to the finalists. The candidates will meet administrators and the advisory committees and, in the case of finalists, the full community will also have access to the candidates in order to provide feedback to the search committee. These visits will take place during October and November and culminate in a single nomination that the Search Committee will present to the Board of Trustees for approval. The final decision of whom to hire rests solely with the Board. We expect to announce the next Head by December 2009.

Once school resumes in September, we will provide detailed information on the interview process, the role of the advisory councils, and opportunities for the broader community to participate in the evaluation and selection of candidates.

In the meantime, enjoy the summer.

In friendship and on behalf of the Search Committee,
Lisa Sack
