On January 9th, many Lower School families participated in the 10th Annual Family Folk Dance at BFS. Third Graders performed an English sword dance, and for the first time, Fourth Graders called some of the dances. (During their regularly scheduled dance classes, all Fourth Grade students had learned how to call, and had the opportunity to practice with a microphone).

Afterwards, some students reflected on the experience:

  • Last year we performed a sword dance, and this year we got to call the dances.
  • There are different moves such as do-si-do, sashay the donut, reel the set and peel the banana.
  • It’s fun to dance with a big group of kids and adults.
  • When you gather a community in the same place, something amazing happens.
  • Live music makes dancing so much better.
  • My mom really loves to folk dance, she doesn’t usually do a lot of dancing.
  • When I got paired up with a little person I danced on my knees.

Here are their favorite dances:
  • I really like Sasha because you get to meet so many people.
  • My favorite dance is Avalanche because it is energetic and fun.
  • The Grumpy March has great music and you get to act grumpy.
  • In Sashay the Donut you go around in a circle really fast, and then jump back to your place.
  • The Virginia Reel gives you a lot of time to spend with your partner.
