BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL
The
team was vastly improved this year. After a winless season last year,
we finished 8-13. We were highly competitive in our league and only
lost one game outside of our league. The team was led by senior
co-captains Shaquille and Ahmad. Great leadership was also provided by
our other six seniors. The players showed considerable dedication in
training to get ready for the season in the fall and attending extra
practice sessions over the winter vacation. Ahmad and Shaquille led the
team in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per game. Ahmad also led the
team in steals and Shaquille in assists. Andrew L, our leading 3 point
shooter, conributed 10 points a game. Forwards Zander and Taj played
rugged defense and rebounding. Kamau, our 6th man, was a defensive
standout. Charles and David, rounded out our departing senior group.
Their attitude and spirit was an example to all. Our only returning
players, sophomore Spencer and junior Owen were important contributors
to the team and will provide leadership for next year's players.
BOYS JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL
The
Brooklyn Friends JV basketball season featured a lot of great moments,
learning experiences, and a glimpse of the future. With an overall
record of 7-12, the best record in more than 7 years and the first
playoff appearance since 2006, the team was led by Dylan, who averaged
17.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game including a
career-high of 30 points against Friends Seminary. Supporting Dylan was
Kevin , scoring 9.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.8 steals a game.
Freshman Avery led the team in assists with 4.5 per game, his best
passing game was in the second game of the season collecting 11 assists
and 10 points. Maceo, Ben, Erez, Olabanji, William, Theo, William,
Brandon, and Nicholas round out the most talented JV team in recent
memory.
MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL
The
team had an exciting and a learning season finishing with a 5-9 record.
With nine seventh graders and four eighth graders the team was young.
They spent the first part of the season learning the team plays and
getting accustomed to playing with each other. But once the team
settled in, you could see that the infusion of new players and the
wisdom of the old players it was going to be a fun season.
Eighth
grader Adam led the way at point guard really being the team’s leader.
You could see Adam during timeouts explaining to his teammates were
they should be and what they should be doing. Eighth grader Lee
brought energy and ball handling skills that was a delight to watch.
Also contributing to the team’s success was eighth grader Roman, who
really improved during the season and made a few important three
pointer that helped this years team to a five win season. Rounding up
the eighth graders included Steve, who when got the opportunity to play
made the best of it.
This year's seventh graders did a great
job bringing energy and enthusiasm to every practice and every game.
The seventh graders who had to be thrown into game situations included
Charlie, Jacob, Patrick, Aidan, and Tyler. The team was led in scoring
by seventh grader Adrian, who averaged close to ten points a game.
Center and the teams leading rebounder Jumokee. Another seventh grader
who shared the bulk of scoring for the team was Bisa. In a game versus
Birch Wathen Lenox he was 3 for 4 from three-point range. A player who
the team was hoping to have an immediate impact but who had an injury
that sidelined him until half way through the season seventh grader
Adam W. All of the players had important roles on this well-balanced
and exciting Brooklyn Friends Boy’s Middle School Basketball team. All
of the players should be congratulated.
GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL
Girls
Basketball had an up and down season this year. The team consisted of
eight juniors and one senior. The team worked really hard and the
overall improvements were noticeable throughout the season. The team
started off with two extremely tough road losses by 2 and 3 points to
the eventual #1 and #2 teams in the league. Then the team went on a
very nice run winning 5 out of the next 6 games (picking up 4 league
wins along the way). Mid way through the season the team hit a bump,
getting off to slow starts and shooting very poorly in the games. The
team continued to fight and and lost a few close games. The team had
their chances, but saw their playoff hopes slip away. The good thing
is that these girl learned a lot this season, and their improvements
over the years are extremely noticeable. Molly A., Chineke N., Krystal
S., Sarah D., Ashley F., Olivia J., Miranda v-S., and Aphri S. all
represented BFS and the Blue Pride throughout the season. We are are
extremely excited about the future as all these girls will be returning
except for one (Maqueda S.), and we might be adding some much needed
energy from our JV Program. We expect big things from this team next
season. Thanks goes out to all the teams managers!!
GIRLS JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL
The
JV Girls Basketball team finished the year on an upbeat note, winning
its last game of the season handedly. The team was relying on some
returning players who ended up not being able to commit due to other
obligations. It was an exciting learning process with the new team and
one holdover/returning player from last year. The new girls brought a
lot of energy and eagerness to learn and to improve. We fought and
battled in most games, winning three. They learned so much, we expect
to have more fun and improve tremendously next season. The core group,
who promises to return next year, offers great us a great future.
Congratulations to Danielle, Adina, Sopfia, Herron, Janna, Hanyang, and
Jayne for sticking it out and growing as a team. A job well done, we
were small and inexperienced but we made some noise and threatened some
of our league opponents.
MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL
The
girls middle school continued building its basketball program. It was
an inconsistent year, full of ups and downs. It was challenging at
times to have only part of the team at practices and games, due to the
fact that most of our players were engaged in other activities and
commitments. As a team, we showed potential and promise; as the season
went on, most of the girls learned their individual roles and
responsibilities. We had a few very exciting games, where we had a
chance to win, but due to our inexperience and lack of practice as a
team, we struggle to put the ball in the hoop. I would say the high
light of the season was the historical triple over time win over LREI,
where we won by 2 points. We only had 5 players during that game; we
finished the game with 4, after one fouled out, and everyone on the
team scored at least once! Other memorable moments included
individual performances of our leading scorer, Anna M, who scored 23
points in a single game; and, our leading defensive specialist, Aria C,
who had over 20 rebounds a couple of times in the season. Overall, it
was an exciting year, and a rewarding learning experience for all.
