Girls Varsity Volleyball The Girls Varsity Volleyball team continued
another successful, fun, and exciting season. We competed this year
with a great, enthusiastic team, composed of the "Lucky 7", who
committed themselves to recovering our BFS volleyball tradition of
success. It was amazing to watch such a dynamic group of girls giving
all they had in every game and practice. A core of experienced 11th
grade players -- co-captains Amaris and Katie, supported by Jessica,
Becky, Erin, Lisa, and our lone 10th grader Herron, led the group. All
of these players will return in 2011 to continue what promises to be
the most exciting year of their high school career! This special group
combined their skills to earn a 13-5 overall record, and capture two
regular season Championships! Everyone contributed. Amaris and Katie
led the way with their offense and setting; Becky and Lisa defended the
net with their dynamic blocking; Jessica, Erin, and Herron guarded the
floor with their aggressive defense and passing! With the addition of
three or four new players next year, the sky will be the limit for our
talented team. The core group will be led by an experienced group of
seniors who will compete for every point, making sure they get the best
possible results playing for their 4th consecutive year on the varsity
team! Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball Coaching
this year’s JV volleyball team has been one of the most enjoyable and
fulfilling experiences I have ever had. The dynamic of the team, along
with a winning season, was exceptional. We had the honor of making it
into post season play in two leagues. In ACIS we played St. Ann’s in
the first playoff round. We had been somewhat injury plagued and only
had 6 girls that could play against a very large St. Ann’s team. It was
a well played game that we came very close to winning. In ISAL, we
played York Prep for the championship. Again, plagued by injuries, we
were short handed. The girls played their hearts out and took second
place. Even though we did not win that match, our team was paid a huge
compliment as we departed the school. Their Headmaster escorted us out
and told us what a “class act” our group of girls were and that “you
don’t always get that”. He proceeded to say that it was always a
pleasure to play Brooklyn Friends as our teams, meaning all BFS teams,
were always respectful and a “positive experience for his students.”
Our
team was led by strong setting from Anna, Sarah, Simret, and Tyler.
Sarah and Tyler were injured toward the end of our season and Simret did
a fine job of stepping up. Chloe led our team in hitting and had many
kills throughout the season. Kyla, Isabelle, Sophia S, and Anna played
all- around with strong hitting and defense. The overall team serving
stats were very high. There were several games in which we had only 6
players and still came out on top. The girls played very well together
and were present throughout the season. They were a delightful group to
work with and very determined to win and to have a positive learning
and playing experience for all. The teamwork and sportsmanship that
this group displayed was noted by several coaches, making this year a
huge success in more ways than one. We are very proud of them all!!
BoysVarsity Cross Country
The
Boys Cross Country team had a great season, winning its first ACIS
league title at the ACIS Championships on Oct. 25. The team scored 24
points and took 3 of the top 4 spots individually. Kieran won the ACIS
individual title, bringing him a total of eight league titles between
cross-country. Newcomers Dante, Sean, and Lucas bolstered a team that
was already returning with a strong core of upperclassmen. Returning
juniors Larry, Alan, Jacob, Spencer, and Jake all helped the team become
a deep and experienced squad, while seniors Jake and Christian helped
provide leadership. The BFS Girls Cross Country team needs more
members! The lone participant on the team was freshmen Elinor, who had a
great season learning the basics of cross-country and earning medals in
every meet she ran in. We will be looking forward to some up and
coming middle schoolers to add to the high school team next season.
Girls Varsity Soccer
Girls
Varsity Soccer improved from last year to break several school records
in one of the most successful seasons in the team’s history. Led by
captains Zoe, Molly, and Beatrice, the team finished with the ‘most
wins in a season’ (5), ‘most goals scored in a season’ (23) and
‘conceded the least goals in a season’ (32). The team was led in scoring
by junior forward Madeleyn who recorded 7 goals (adding to her 11 goals
scored over 2008 and 2009) and 3 assists in 11 games. Freshman
sensations Julia and Olivia had impressive starts to high school soccer,
sharing 7 goals and 2 assists between them, playing important roles in
defense and attack. The team was supported by excellent goalkeeping by
sophomore Janna and freshman Sophie recording 4 clean-sheets with no
goals conceded. The BFS defensive became an organized unit helping the
goalkeepers keeping our opponents scoreless. The defense consisted of
Hannah, Clara, Sofia, Krystal, Miriam, Oona, and Patrice. Moving into
midfield, Molly and Beatrice marshaled the center of the pitch winning
back possession with tough tackles, creating goal-scoring opportunities,
and scoring a few as well. Molly scored 5 goals with 4 assists, and the
more defensive-minded Beatrice with 1 assist. Our impressive wingers
and strikers were Victoria (1 assist), Olivia (5 goals/1 assist),
Madeleyn (7 goals/3 assists), Zoe (3 goals/4 assists), Rosie and Rayvin.
With the loss of five seniors, but a highly potential cast of freshman
and incoming 8th grade players, the team will have challenging goals
next season to build upon the success of 2010. "Great season!" to the
entire Girl’s Varsity Soccer team. Thank you to the seniors for four
years of dedication: Beatrice, Krystal, Molly, Miriam, and Hannah. Boys Varsity Soccer
While
the team won only one game and drew another, they played with spirit
and determination. In the last game of the season against Berkeley
Carroll, they came back from a 0-3 deficit to score two goals. Morgan
led the team from the back and played outstandingly as sweeper;
co-captain Max and four other seniors played with pride and passion in
their last season at BFS. Along with Morgan, gutsy playmaker Ben
received an all-league award. The awards for most improved players were
given to Jose, our reliable left back, and Adam, who stepped up to play
goalkeeper towards the end of the season. The winner of the 110% award
went to forward Misha, who shows enormous promise for future seasons. Middle School Volleyball The
fifteen players on this team had an exciting season, continuing the BFS
volleyball traditions of commitment, teamwork and success. Everyone
worked very hard during the opening weeks of the season and this paid
off when we won our opening match. The returning 8th grade players,
Bella, Calli, Daisy, Fiona and Karie, were excellent mentors to the new
7th grade players - Abby, Ashley, Caroline, Grace, Jaden, Julian, Maya,
Nell, Sonya and Taty. All players improved their serving and passing
skills a great deal over the course of the season. They also learned to
play together as one unit on the court. Managers Airenakhue and Malik
were very helpful to team, helping to set up the gym for home matches,
keeping the score, and serving as lines judges. Whether the team was up
or down score-wise the girls were always pumped and ready to play some
great volleyball. Playing music in the gym during our last few home
match warm-ups really increased the spirit & camaraderie of the team
players. The bleachers were consistently full of family, friends, BFS
faculty members and younger students cheering us on. Kudos to this
young team for posting 5 wins! Middle School Soccer On
Nov. 3, the Brooklyn Friends Middle School soccer team brought a close
to a wonderful fall season by playing an all girls exhibition game
against Mary McDowell. On the strength of a hat trick by Lily the girls
took the game 4-0. There has been a tremendous amount of growth for
this group of young people, resulting in an exciting season of soccer in
2010, as well as potential for more success next year. After losing
their first two games and three of their first four, the boys and girls
of BFS went on to win five of their final eight games, for a season
record of 6-4-2. Included in their second half turnaround was a four
game winning streak to conclude the season. Top goal scorers Paolo and
Noah with 9 goals each led the team. Paolo also led the team with 5
assists. The team had many contributors along the way with eight
different goal scorers this season. On defense the tandem of Jackson
and Louisa were a formidable duo in the middle, while Max brought
stability and grit between the pipes as he started all but one game at
goal and recorded two shut outs. The team finished 3-3 in the ISAL
soccer league. Their third place finish is the best result in several
years, and they missed the playoffs by only one win. The hard work and
sacrifice often tells more about a team then the statistics ever could.
That is where our boys and girls excelled, giving us much to be proud of
in 2010 and a bright future to look forward to.
Middle School Cross Country The
middle school cross-country competed for the first time this season.
We had six girls on the team -- Giovanna, Maya, Ash, Sierra, Mason, and
Grace who all came to practice and worked hard during the fall. They
all saw improvements in their fitness, being able to run further and
further each practice. The girls competed in an ISAL meet on Oct. 4,
with Giovanna finishing in second place overall! The future is bright
for the girls upper school team with these five moving up to join them
in the next couple of years.
