Every year the American Classical League administers the National Latin Exam to 140,000 students in 50 states and 11 countries. The exam assesses students’ knowledge of the Latin language, English derivatives, Roman culture, mythology, geography and history.
This year, Brooklyn Friends students reaped a bountiful harvest of awards, so many in fact that they arrived not in the customary 9 by 12 envelope but in a large box!
In the middle school, 52 Latinists won awards. Of the 40 7th grade students who sat for the Introduction to Latin exam, 22 won ribbons and certificates for outstanding achievement and 9 won certificates of achievement. Of the 30 8th grade students who sat for the Latin I exam, 11 won gold medals for their summa cum laude performances, 4 won maxima cum laude silver medals, 5 earned magna cum laude and 2 attained cum laude. Maya K. distinguished herself with a perfect score!
In the upper school, three students won awards for the Latin II exam, two magna cum laude and one cum laude. One IB student won a maxima cum laude (silver medal) for his work on the Latin V exam.
