In addition to building the Family Center at 189 Schermerhorn Street, Brooklyn Friends School is undertaking the renovation of classrooms and corridors on the second, sixth and seventh floors at 375 Pearl Street. This work is intended to provide additional classrooms to accommodate the intended first grade and second grade additions. The scope of the work is to include the renovation of 8634 sq ft at 375 Pearl Street and 4752 sq ft at 189 Schermerhorn Street.
The work is to include and is not limited to the following:
Move the family center to a new location:
The existing Family Center, located on the 2nd floor, will move to 189 Schermerhorn Street. This site is located on the ground floor of a residential building. The space is approximately 4752 square feet. It is currently raw space and requires a complete build out. The intended program will have 36 two-year old students, three classrooms, indoor play space, office, pantry, lounge, conference room, storage rooms, stroller space, and reception area.
Move the Preschool orange room into the family center space:
Renovate the existing Family Center room and move the Preschool Fours Orange room into that space.
Move the Sixth Floor library to the Second Floor Preschool orange room:
Move the Library down to a renovated space on the north east corner of the second floor (current orange room). This room will have new library shelving, circulation desk, furniture, lighting system and flooring.
Renovate the west side (front of building) of the Sixth floor & Corridor:
Renovate the entire west side of the 6th fl and create three Kindergarden classrooms similar to the 7th fl KC room. We will install new kitchens, new furniture and additional high cabinets for storage.
Renovate the Corridor by raising the ceiling, installing new lighting, new flooring, new ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) bathroom, renovate existing bathrooms on 6th and 7th floors, install new ventilation system and new bulletin boards.
Add one additional class room at east side (rear of building) of 7th floor
Phase one of the 7th floor took place last year by creating an additional Kindergarten classroom (KC) and phase two will include the addition of one first grade and one second grade classroom. This will involve the renovation of the entire east side classrooms from four to five classrooms. This will include new kitchens, furniture, cubbies, lighting system, ventilation, Ino boards and additional high cabinets for storage.
A Greener School Building
The work will incorporate green design approaches such as energy efficiency and environmentally friendly products.
- The lighting system will be replaced by energy efficient light fixtures.
- The furniture will be built with no formaldehyde
- The paint will have no Volatile Organic Compounds
- The flooring is made from natural raw materials including linseed oil (from flax seeds), pine rosins, wood flour (finely ground sawdust), and ecologically-friendly pigments that contain no heavy metals such as lead or cadmium. Is a natural organic product whose performance is enhanced over time as a result of the continued oxidation of linseed oil, a process which makes it naturally durable and anti-microbial. Is anti-static--an ideal choice for allergy and asthma sufferers.
The Space will have plenty of natural light, ventilation and be safe for our students to enjoy.
