Exciting work is under way this summer to support the strategic expansion of Brooklyn Friends School. In addition to opening the new Family Center at Brooklyn Friends at 189 Schermerhorn Street, BFS is undertaking the renovation of classrooms and corridors on the second, sixth and seventh floors at 375 Pearl Street. This work will provide classrooms to accommodate the additional sections of first grade (as of 2011-12) and second grade (as of 2012-13) as outlined in the BFS Strategic Plan. There will be 8,634 square feet of space renovated at 375 Pearl Street and 4,752 square feet of new construction at 189 Schermerhorn Street. Michel Rimpel, BFS Director of Physical Plant, is managing both projects. The Family Center The existing Family Center, located on the second floor, will move to the ground floor of 189 Schermerhorn Street, a residential building. Sara Soll will direct the program, which will enroll 36 to 40 two-year old students. There will be three classrooms, indoor play space, office, pantry, lounge, conference room, storage rooms, stroller space, and reception area. Musical “Rooms” on the Second Floor The Preschool Orange Room will move into the existing Family Center space, and the Preschool/Lower School Library on the sixth floor will move down into the existing Orange Room space. This renovated room will have brand new library shelving, circulation desk, furniture, lighting system, and flooring. Renovating the Sixth Floor The entire west side of the sixth floor (front of the building) will be renovated to create three Kindergarten classrooms similar to the K-C room created last summer. Workers will install new kitchens, new furniture and additional high cabinets for storage. The corridor’s ceiling will be raised, with new lighting and new flooring installed. A new ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) bathroom will be built, and existing bathrooms will be renovated. There will be a new ventilation system and new bulletin boards. Renovating the Seventh Floor Phase 1 of the seventh floor renovation began last summer and will continue this summer with the renovation of the entire east side of the floor (rear of the building) from four to five classrooms. New kitchens, furniture, cubbies, lighting system, ventilation, white boards and high cabinets will be installed. A Greener School Building All work will incorporate green design approaches, such as energy efficiency and environmentally friendly products. • The lighting system will be replaced by energy-efficient light fixtures. • The furniture will be built with no formaldehyde. • The paint will have no volatile organic compounds. • The flooring is made from natural raw materials, which are durable, anti-microbial, and anti-static – an ideal choice for allergy and asthma sufferers. • The space will have plenty of natural light, ventilation and will be safe for our students to enjoy. |
