Highlights from the Week of Sept. 19, 2011 |
| |
|
9/20/11 On Monday the BFS Girls Varsity Volleyball Team
defeated BWL 2-0 (25-7, 25-13) in the upper gym. The team took another
step in the right direction. The girls are starting to understand what
it takes to take control of a game, they showed consistency and great
communication! Co-captains Amaris B. and Katie C. again led the way
combining forces for 11 assists and 11 kills, and 9 digs. Katie also
added 8 serving aces. The 3rd captain Jessica C. joined in the fun with
2 aces, 3 digs, and 1 assist. Senior middle hitter, Becky G. added 4
kills; Sarah M., Anna M., and Herron H. contributed with 4 aces, and 3
digs. The teams other other middle hitter, Chloe B., had a consistent
overall game. Everyone showed improvement on the court.
The BFS Girls Varsity Soccer Team
picked up its first win of the season defeating LWA 6-0 on the road.
It was a dominating performance with BFS taking 19 shots, 5 corners,
missing a penalty, and hitting the post and bar on two occasions.
Freshman Aoife H. led the way with her first two varsity goals, freshmen
Sarah F. and Julia B. also scored their first career BFS goals giving
BFS a 4-0 lead at the half. Two more goals early in the 2nd half from
senior co-Captain Madeleyn V. and freshman Louisa G. made the score 6-0
(Assists: Madeleyn, Janna, Sarah, Julia B, Lotte). A great save from
sophomore goalie Sophie A. kept the clean-sheet, and she was ably
assisted in defense with important tackles from Julia G, Mimi G., and
Victoria L. Sophomores Clara S. and Lotte W. controlled the midfield
and fed plenty of balls for the powerful forward runs of Janna J. The
future looks bright for coach Gary Lawson with four freshman players
scoring five of the six goals.
The BFS Boys & Girls Varsity Cross Country Teams
participated in their first meets of the season. The ACIS meet took
place up at Van Cortlandt Park. Senior Dante P. led the way coming in
first place with a time of 20:42 in the Boys meet out of 24 runners.
Freshmen Jacob I. and Marcus A. finished in 10th (23:47) and 14th
(24:52) place respectively. On the girls side freshman Giovanna M. led
the way with a time of 30:02 and an 8th place finish. Sophomore Elinor
H. ran a time of 30:10 and finished in 9th place, while freshman Maya K.
finished with a time of 30:53, coming in 10th place out of 14 total
runners.
9/21/11 On Tuesday the BFS MS Girls Volleyball Team
defeated BC 2-0 (25-13, 25-16) in their season opener in the upper
gym. This win was a real team effort as every girl eligible to play saw
court time. All team members supported each other throughout the match
with spirited vocal cheers. Caroline C. contributed nine service
points for BFS. Dalia K. did an excellent job in her debut as one of
our team managers, assisting our veteran manager, 9th grader Malik W. The BFS MS Soccer Team
also defeated BC 2-0 in its first game of the season at Red Hook. The
team jumped out in front at the ten minute mark when Noah W. was able to
cash in from 20 feet on a sharp angle shot. The goalie made a great
effort to stop the ball, however after the initial stop the ball's
momentum carried on and over the line. The second goal came at the 25
minute mark on a penalty kick by newcomer to the team Halima M. She was
denied a shot when she was tackled in the box. She cashed in on the
penalty kick with a low shot to the right corner to make the score 2-0.
From that point on it was up to the defense and our goal keeper to nail
down the victory. The defense did their and goalie Max N. recorded the
2-0 shutout.
9/22/11 On Wednesday the BFS Middle School Volleyball
team posted another win, defeating BWL 2-0 (25 - 22, 25 - 15) in the
upper gym. BWL had some very strong servers and our team was pushed to
maximize their serve receive skills. They rose to the occasion in true
BFS style!! In game one Nell P. served eleven straight service points,
three of which were aces. Tyler Roberts came in off the bench at the
end of game one to help seal the win. In the second game Ashley A.
served well under pressure, helping BFS build and then maintain our
lead. Abby M., Taty R., Caroline C., and Maya W. moved well offensively
throughout the game, helping BFS win many side outs. Congratulations
to the entire team!!
The BFS Middle School Soccer Team
also posted another win; they defeated BWL 5-0 down at Red Hook. BFS
opened up its ISAL league schedule with a contest against BWL. BFS
jumped out to an early lead as Paolo F. scored four minutes into the
game from 15'. The early goal turned out to be a sign of things to come
as only two minutes later Sam G. put in the team's second goal, and
five minutes after that at the 11 minute mark Sam cashed in again for
his second goal of the game. Paolo capped off the first half scoring
with his second goal at the 20 minute mark and the team held on from
there to take a 4-0 lead into half time. The quick scoring attack went
back to work immediately after the half when Julian B. scored his first
goal of the season just one minute into the second half. From that
point on the team continued to play solid defense with contributions
from many different players to hold on for the 5-0 shutout victory
(goalie Max N.). Blue Pride!!
The BFS Boys Varsity Soccer Team
played a great game vs. LREI -- They earned a valuable draw, scoring
late in the game to claw back to a 3-3 finish. Theo E. played his first
game in goal and dominated the penalty area. Misha H. captained the
team admirably and had a number of darting runs in the opposition half,
one resulting in a fine goal. Despite leading 2-0 early in the second
half, BFS found themselves trailing 2-3, no thanks to two unlucky
penalties conceded to LREI. Dylan S. scored his second goal late in the
game to level the score. Freshman Lucas M. was the BFS "man of the
match," and he showed great composure when passing and tackling. Blue
Pride!!
9/23/11
On Thursday the BFS JV Girls Volleyball
team defeated UNIS 2-1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-18) on the road. After losing
the first set they were able to regroup. The serving and passing
improved tremendously during the second set. Everyone got to play and
did an excellent job during comeback. It was a true team effort. The
most inspiring part of the victory was the fact that whether the girls
were on or off the court they were all in the game. The bench was
cheering, they were ready to go when needed, the girls on the court were
encouraging each other. It was truly a wonderful thing to see from a
coaching perspective. And, on a personal note, this is Coach Staci's
first win against UNIS in seven years. She was almost speechless -- and
extremely proud of the team!!
The BFS Girls Varsity Volleyball
team continued moving in the right direction. The team remained
undefeated with a 2-0 (25-15, 25-21) victory over UNIS on the road.
After making a rotation adjustment, playing Jessica C. as an outside
hitter, and Herron H. as a middle hitter, the team showed great overall
consistency. Again, captains Jessica, Amaris B., and Kaite C. led the
way, combining forces with 10 kills, and 37 defensive digs. Katie and
Amaris also added great serving and setting, collecting 8 aces and 14
assists. Middle hitters, Becky G. and Herron, added 4 kills; Sarah M.,
Anna M., and Erin C. contributed with their overall effort and
consistent play. The girls continue improving their overall
understanding of their role, making progress in each game. It was a
great win against a great rival...Blue Pride!!
9/24/11 On Friday the BFS Girls Varsity Volleyball
team defeated Garden 2-0 (25-14, 25-9). The team started a little slow
and unfocused, but towards the middle of the first set the team
improved its overall performance, and played up to their level. Anna M.,
Amaris B., and Katie C. combined for 17 aces. Sarah M. and Herron H.
stepped up to attack from the middle and combined for 4 aces and one
block. Erin C., playing as libero, provided consistent defense on the
back row. Another great win and another real team effort…5-0
(undefeated) Blue Pride!! |
