The Visual Arts at Brooklyn Friends

The Visual Arts program is a cohesive, developmental sequence that spans kindergarten through twelfth grade. Throughout the program, starting with the youngest children, students are exposed to the history of art, looking at the work of many artists and civilizations to inspire and excite their own work.  The curriculum includes work in a broad range of media including drawing and painting, sculpture, ceramics, woodworking, photography and video.  We have a series of well-equipped art studios clustered together and staffed with eight professional faculty who are trained in both education and art.  Each teacher produces artwork in his/her own media and many continue to exhibit.

The Visual Arts faculty develops curricula based on the media taught.  The emphasis is on the integrity of art as a discipline and there is some integration with other subject areas. Teachers have a great deal of interaction, support, suggestions and cross-pollenization with each other and with other departments.

The School has established a strong, obvious commitment to the visual arts which is evident in the well-displayed work throughout the building as well as the All School Student Art Show and theBridge Film Festival, two major, well-attended events held annually in the spring.
