Highlights from the Week of Oct. 10, 2011

10/12/11

On Tuesday the BFS Girls Varsity Volleyball team defeated Steiner 2-0 (25-20, 25-9).  After a long weekend, the team got off to slow start in the first set, but they were able to pick things up.  After refocusing during the second set, the team became more consistent and took control of the match.  Captains Jessica C., Amaris B., and Katie C. led the transition and offense combining for 11 kills.  Jessica played strong defense, adding 7 digs.  Amaris provided great setting, adding 12 assists, and Katie added 4 serving aces.  Middle hitters, Herron H. and Chloe B. contributed offensively with 4 kills, and 2 aces.  Outside hitter, Anna M., added 1 kill, 3 assists, 2 aces, and 3 digs.  Defensive specialist, Sarah M. and Erin C. provided consistent all around play.

On Wednesday during wet conditions the BFS Girls Varsity Soccer team defeated LREI 6-0 down at Red Hook.  Up 3-0 at the half the team was in control throughout.  Junior Janna J. celebrated her birthday with two goals and two assists, while she was a constant menace up front with her powerful runs.  Senior Madeleyn V. also scored two goals taking her season total to 8 so far.  Madeleyn helped BFS to an early 1-0 lead scoring a half-volley after receiving the ball from the LREI goal kick.  Aoife H. and Julia G. followed shortly and scored a goal each to give BFS a 3-0 lead at the half. The second half started in similar fashion with Madeleyn scoring again within the first two minutes.  Janna and Olivia P. combined excellently to set up Janna 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper, and Janna finished with a powerful strike.  Five minutes later Janna scored again after good work with Olivia extending the final score to 6-0.  Olivia had 2 assists and Madeleyn had one for BFS. The team achieved their 4th clean sheet and their 4th win of the season. The teams record stands at 4-4-1 and the team has scored 24 goals in 9 games.


The BFS MS Girls Volleyball team dug deep and came out winners once again in a tough match against local downtown rival Packer 2-0 (28-26, 26-24) at their gym.  All of the BFS players are to be congratulated for making critical adjustments to both their serves and their passing during the match.  Accomplishing these adjustments required mental focus, physical flexibility, patience and perseverance!   Both games were won in overtime:  28-26 and 26 - 24.  The team was happy to their fans cheering them on!  Blue Pride!  


The BFS Boys & Girls Varsity Cross Country team participated in an ISAL Meet up at Van Cortlandt Park.  Jose U. was the teams first finisher on the boys side coming in 15th place with a time of 23:16 and Marcus A. finished with a time of 23:59 coming in 20th place out of 27 total.  Giovanna M. was the teams first finisher on the girls side coming in 4th place with a time of 23:49, while Maya K. came in right behind in 5th place with a time of 25:01, and Elinor H. finished in 12th place with a time of 29:05 out of 20 total runners.


The BFS MS Boys & Girls Cross Country team also participated in an ISAL Meet.  The MS runners continue to do well, Philip C. came in first place with a time of 8:33, while Emmitt S. and Miles N. were not far behind in fourth (8:57) and fifth place (9:01) respectively out of 26 total runners. Naomi M. represented the girls and did a good job. She came in 12th place with a time of 12:11 out of 15 total runners. She has an excellent attitude and gives everything she has during the races.


1014/11

On Thursday theBFS Girls Varsity Volleyball team defeated LFNY 2-0 (26-24,25-14) on the road.  The girls started out strong a strong and had a comfortable lead, then they lost our focus in the middle of the first game allowing LFNY to get back in.  After regaining their confidence and siding out at 22-23, behind Chloe B.'s serves they took the lead for good and finished the game winning by 2 points.  The girls carried their confidence to the second set, controlling the game from beginning to end to win by 11 points.  The highlights of this game were their mental strength and will to win.  Everyone understood the required focus and determination needed to play as a team and finish strong.

On Friday theBFS Girls Varsity Volleyball teamcontinued their winning ways as they defeated Friends Seminary 2-0 (25-14,25-20) in the upper gym.  The team continued playing a consistent volleyball, taking control from beginning to end.  Amaris B., Katie C., and Becky G. led the way combining for 9 aces and 9 kills.  Katie also added 8 digs, while Jessica C. added 5 digs.  Herron H., Erin C., Anna M., Chloe B., and Sarah M. continued to provide great defensive and offensive support.    The team is peaking at the right time…with the playoffs right around the corner.  That is their 12 win out of 13 tries.  Go Panthers!!


The BFS MS Volleyball team traveled to the Upper East Side for a match with Dalton.  During the first set the girls never found a rhythm as a team and all the players made many uncharacteristic errors, leading to a 22-25 loss.  After regrouping and finding their blue pride, the team went on to win sets two and three 25-10 and 25-18 respectively.  This match was a great learning experience for the team, as they motivated one another to play better and never lost their confidence.  A popular team cheer helped them get their groove back - "that's okay, that's alright, shake it off, shake it off, yeah!"  Nell P. did an amazing job on defense, moving beautifully and digging up many balls.  Caroline C. contributing 15 service points and Abby M. had 7 serving aces.  The team remains undefeated at 9-0.  Blue Pride!!


The BFS Girls Varsity Soccer team won 2-0 in a rain soaked game against UNIS down at Red Hook.  BFS peppered the UNIS goalkeeper with many shots in the 1st half but couldn't break through.  Tied 0-0 at the half, BFS was able to open things up in the second half with goals from Madeleyn V. and Aoife H.  There was a huge sigh of relief when Madeleyn broke free and slotted home for her 9th goal of the season.  Aoife scored shortly afterwards on an assist from Lotte for BFS to take a 2-0 lead.  The team picked up their fifth win of the season, and extended their unbeaten run also to five games.
