On Monday theBFS MS Volleyball team won
an exciting three set match, defeating Staten Island Academy 2-1 (25-9,
22-25, 25-14) and furthering their winning streak to 10 matches. The
players came out strong as a team and dominated set one with consistent
serving and passing. The girls worked together and won several points
by controlling the ball with two or three touches before passing it
over. In set two BFS had an uncharacteristic eight service errors and
many passing errors. After losing six straight points at the start of
set three BFS regrouped, got their game on and never looked back.
During the match Maya W. contributed 14 service points, Ruby P. 9 and
Abby M. 8. Taty R. moved beautifully in both the back and front rows,
making many point-winning plays for BFS. Blue Pride!
The BFS MS Soccer team got
back in the win column with an 8-4 victory over UNIS down in Red Hook.
The team received key contributions from multiple sources. Eighth
grader Noah W. and seventh grader Mali A. each scored 2 goals, while
seventh graders Sophie S., Charlie S., and Ben F. each scored a goal, as
well as eighth grader Charlie H. The player of the game was Charlie
S., as he recorded 5 assists to go along with his goal. Nice job team!
The BFS Girls Varsity Cross Country team participated
in an ISAL Meet up at Van Cortlandt Park. Giovanna M. led the way for
BFS finishing in 4th place with a time of 24:32. Elinor H. ran a time
of 31:01 good for 11th place and right behind her was Maya K. with a
time of 31:02 good for twelfth place out of 17 total runners.

On Tuesday the BFS Girls JV Volleyball team defeated
Packer in an exciting come from behind win in front of a packed BFS
crowd in the upper gym. It was a real nail biter until the end. After
losing the first set (13-25), the BFS girls pulled it together. With
strong serving, passing, and teamwork BFS was able to win the next 2
sets (25-22, 27-25) and, therefore, win the match 2-1 to put the team in
strong contention for playoffs. After losing the first set the girls
were able to compose themselves, relax, and play the way they know how
to play. Kudos to Packer for giving us a great match. It truly was one
of the best volleyball matches of the season!!

On Wednesday the BFS MS Girls Volleyball team had
a straight set victory over Leman Manhattan Preparatory School (25 - 9,
25 - 23). All team members saw court time and contributed to this
win. The Leman team was down one player due to absences. Tyler R.,
Anna F., Ashley A., Caila F., and Sonya R. showed great sportsmanship by
volunteering to help them as their sixth player on the court. We
played a third game for exhibition and the BFS team had the chance to
try out a new offensive system they had just learned the day before,
employing Abby M. and Maya W. as designated setters. The team did a
great job with the rotations and switches required. The win maintains
BFS' undefeated season at 11-0...Go Panthers!!

On Thursday the BFS Girls Varsity Volleyball team
competed in the ACIS Semifinals vs. UNIS at St. Francis College. BFS
advances with a 3-1 win (25-21, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20). The girls
maintained focus for most of the match. Everyone understood that we
needed to give a great effort, and keep our determination in order to
advance to the finals. Amaris B. had 4 aces, 7 kills, 9 assists, and 10
digs. Katie C. had another strong performance with 3 aces, 6 kills, 12
assists, 13 digs, and 2 blocks. Our other starters Becky G., Jessica
C., Herron H., and Anna M. combined to contribute 14 kills. Jessica
also finished with 19 digs after a slow defensive start. Anna was also
able to contribute 12 digs, while Sarah M., Chloe B., and Erin C. added
10 digs as the teams defensive specialists. Tomorrow the team will meet
local rival Packer in the ACIS Championship at Polytechnic Institute of
NYU. Go Panthers!!
The BFS MS Soccer team defeated
Leman Manhattan Prep 2-0 down at Red Hook. BFS was missing a few
players in the match due to the rescheduling of this game from the
previous day's rainout. Everyone in attendance stepped up and played
extra minutes, and the team played extremely well. BFS was led by
seventh grader Halima M. who scored the only two goals in the game
during the first half. Halima was set up on the goals with beautiful
passes by eighth graders Charlie H. and Sam H. Eighth grade goalie Max
N. posted the shut out for BFS. Blue Pride!!

The Girls Varsity Volleyball team
lost to Packer in the ACIS finals 3-1(18-25, 20-25 ,25-18,16-25) on
Friday at NYU/Poly Tech in a game that seemed to be more mental than
physical. When the team stayed focused and kept the ball in play, they
did well; when unfocused, they made mistakes and made it easy for a
strong Packer team to dominate.
On Friday the MS Soccer team
defeated Mary McDowell 2-0 down at Red Hook to push its current streak
to three in a row. Eighth grader goalies Max N. and Henry J. combined
for the shutout. Seventh grader Charlie S. scored in the first half on a
drop ball. The second goal was scored by eighth grader Charlie H. on a
corner kick delivered by Charlie S. The team is having a tremendous
season. Blue Pride!!
The Boys Varsity Soccer
team played to a 3-3 tie against Berkeley Carroll on the road at the
Parade Grounds. On a windy and cold afternoon, maybe the first real day
of autumn, the team warmed up. In the second game of the season BFS
lost 7-1 against them. But this time was different. The team kept
their composure all season and the upperclassmen led the way as the team
has grown closer together. The team also had the support of some great
fans during Friday's final regular season contest. Why did we start
the game so well? Why did we possess the ball during the first 15
minutes? It is maybe a combination of complacency from BCS and willing
to do well from BFS. We scored first: Senior Dylan S. had an amazing
run and was about to shoot on target when a desperate defender from BCS
stopped him illegally. The referee called for a penalty kick that
Junior captain Misha H. converted. BFS now led 1-0, and the team was
ready and willing to compete and show their improvement. After this
goal, BCS started to react, making some substitutions, getting more
aggressive, and pressuring us. We stood up to the challenge, until they
were able to put in a corner kick and posted an unfortunate own goal.
The first half ended in a 1-1 tie. BFS was being applauded by their
great fans, but still disappointed that they lost the lead. The
substitutes, from the sideline, were ready to offer them water and
encouragements. Coach Chris gave a legendary pep talk and fixed some of
the tactical gaps. The players were eager to get back on the field and
continue to compete and play. They were ready to enter the second half
with strength and confidence. Unfortunately, the second half didn't
start as well as the first. BCS scored two goals and we were now
possessing the ball more. BFS was down 3-1 and things weren't looking
so good. A dark cloud was approaching and the fans were starting to
disenchant. This was until with about ten minutes left freshman Thomas
C. decided to wake up everyone up. After a team effort to win the ball
back, Tom dribbled through the whole BCS defense and eventually the
goalkeeper to score. There was some Zidane and Messi in this action.
The team was electrified, the fans were delighted. One more to go to
tie things up. The team pushed, pushed, and pushed some more upper and
upper, until this lightning of genius from Tom and this pass to junior
Theo E. who stayed on his feet while rattled by the opponent and scored
this golden goal. There were two minutes left, both teams continued to
work and tried hard to score a last winning goal, but that did not
happen. Yes, it is a tie, but for BFS it is even more than a win. All
involved, players, coaches, and fans had a memorable afternoon out on
the pitch. This eventful game has set the stage for Monday's ACIS
Playoff Game between the same two teams in the same place. To be
continued...

On Saturday the MS Volleyball team won the Poly Prep Invitational
Tournament. The girls competed hard all morning, showing amazing
physical and mental endurance. All team members contributed to this
great tournament victory! In Round One we defeated the Poly "B" team in
straight games and split games with both the Poly "A" team and the St.
Ann's team. The teams with the best records from the morning advanced
to the Championship Round. This meant BFS faced St. Ann's once again.
In a hard fought match BFS defeated St. Ann's 25 - 19, 25 - 20.
Congratulations to St. Ann's for giving us a great match. Thanks to
everyone who made Saturday's event a great success... Blue Pride!!
