Highlights from the Week of Oct. 24, 2011
10/25
On Monday the BFS Boys & Girls Cross Country team participated in the ACIS Championships up at Van Cortlandt Park.  The boys were led by Marcus A. who ran a time of 23:52 finishing in 28th place.  His teammates were not far behind, Jacob I. ran a time of 23:56 coming in 30th place, while Jose U. ran a time of 24:27 finishing in 32nd place out of 41 total runners.  The girls were led by Giovanna M. who ran a time of 24:21 finishing in 9th place.  Maya K. ran a time of 30:41 coming in 19th place, while Elinor H. ran a time of 31:18 finishing in 21st place out of 24 total runners.

The BFS MS Boys & Girls Cross Country team ran in the ISAL Championship Meet also at Van Cortlandt Park.  The boys were able to capture the ISAL crown with great finishes by Miles N. who posted a time of 8:21 coming in 2nd place, Emmitt S. posted a time of 8:40 coming 3rd place, and Philip C. posted a time of 8:43 coming in 4th place, as well as, Kamal G. who ran a time of 10:25 finishing in 25th place out of 32 total runners.  On the girls end, Naomi M. represented BFS with a time of 10:37 finishing in 5th place out of 13 total runners.

The BFS MS Girls Volleyball team worked very hard to earn their 12th straight victory against a very athletic and talented opponent,  the Rudolf Steiner School.  Teamwork, focus, and the paradox of calmness/hustle were the intangible strengths on display in the BFS players.  These strengths combined with our higher serving percentage (BFS served 82% as a team, Steiner just 65%) and more accurate passing, produced the BLUE PRIDE win 25 - 19, 25 - 15.  Maya W. served seven service points in game one.  Nell P. made two varsity level digs (saves) to keep the ball alive on our side, and her teammates were able to pass her dug balls over for two very nice winning points.  BFS was unbeatable at the net, making several three-touch winning plays!  At a key point in our second game (17 - 14) Ashley A. came in off the bench and served six straight service points!  It was another real team effort.  Way to go girls...

The BFS Girls Varsity Soccer team beat Mary McDowell 8-2 down at Red Hook. The team showed its eye for goals, with six different goalscorers.  A brace of goals from Aoife H., and other goals from Janna J., Olivia P., Clara S., Madeleyn V., Oona M., and Sophie A., tallied eight goals in the game.  Assists were picked up from Madeleyn, Clara, Olivia , Oona, and two from Victoria L.  Mary McDowell kept working hard and managed to score a goal in each half, but rarely threatened to close the six goal deficit.  The team has one more game remaining as it is looking for its first ever winning season.

10/26
On Tuesday the BFS Girls Varsity Volleyball team defeated Dwight 3-1 (26-28, 25-13, 25-12, 25-23) in the ISAL Semifinals at St. Francis College.  It was a great mental challenge for the team.  After dropping the first game, they re-focused their mindset and played with great heart and determination.  It took a total team effort to defeat a competitive Dwight team.  Katie C. played a great all around game with 23 digs, 20 assists, 7 kills, and 5 aces.  Amaris B. led the team on offense with 15 kills.  Jessica C. led the team defensively with 24 digs.  Becky G., Herron H., and Anna M., provided great overall play.  Chloe B. and Erin C. contributed defensively.  The win advances BFS to the ISAL Championship Game on Thursday.

The BFS Boys Varsity Soccer team traveled to Chelsea Piers on a crisp fall afternoon and took on LREI in a "rematch" following a 3-3 thriller earlier in the season.  This team has improved markedly in the last few weeks, the high point being another 3-3 tie against league opponent Berkeley Carroll.  We dominated from the start and Julien B. and Dylan S. saw lots of action up front.  Captain Misha H. worked tirelessly, and eventually the deadlock was broken by freshman Julien B.  Another freshman Lucas M. added another before halftime with a cool chip over the goalkeeper.  There were some jitters at the back in the second half when our opponents scored, but defensive players Alan H. and Larry N. were equal to the task.  Lucas, Misha, and Will W. all scored in the second half to seal a well-earned 5-2 victory for BFS.  Blue Pride!!

10/27
On Wednesday the BFS MS Boys & Girls Cross Country team completed its season with a Fun Run at Cadman Plaza.  The 1.5 mile race consisted of four loops around park.  Brooklyn Friends had two runners compete in the race, Miles N. and Emmitt S. They paced second and fourth respectively. It was a good finish to a great season.  Blue Pride!!

The BFS MS Boys Soccer team defeated Garden 5-1 down in Red Hook to pick up its 10th win of the season.  The win improves the teams record to 10-4 (5-1 in ISAL).  Halima M. and Noah W. scored two goals each, while Jesse I. scored one.  Sam G. had two assists, along with solo assists by Shomari M., Noah W. , and Mali A.  The team is right back on the pitch tomorrow as it takes on a tough league opponent in LFNY.

Lucky 13 - Unlucky 13?  Whoever said thirteen is an unlucky number hasn't met the BFS MS Girls Volleyball team.  Through determination and teamwork the girls won their 13th consecutive match on Wednesday, beating downtown rival St. Ann's 2-0 (26 - 24 and 25 - 17).  Sonya R. came up with four strong and well-placed serves to take the team from a 22 - 24 deficit to the 26 - 24 victory in game one.  Throughout the match all players served well and passed well, plus showed amazing unity and team spirit.  Blue Pride!

The BFS Girls Varsity Soccer team defeated LFNY 6-0 and finished the season with a 7-6-1 record.  This is the first time this program has had a winning season.  Way to go girls and coaches.  Senior Madeleyn V. scored a wonderful hat trick in her last high school game and finished the season with 14 goals in 13 games. The soccer program at BFS grows from strength to strength, year on year, scoring 42 goals in 14 games, and only conceding 24 goals, while recording 6 clean sheets along the way. This small group of only 14 players, missing their talented senior Zoe B. with a season-long injury, played above and beyond expectations with impressive performances against some of the big established soccer programs.  Coach Gary Lawson has the program moving in the right direction with plenty of energy and enthusiasm.  The Girls and coaching staff are already looking forward to next season!

10/28/11
On Thursday the BFS Girls Varsity Volleyball team defeated Churchill 2-0 (25-13, 25-15) at LFNY to win the ISAL Championship.  All the hard work resulted on a rewarding and fairly easy win.  The seniors really stepped up and showed the way with their determination, focus, and intensity.  Everyone contributed to this win.  Sophomore Sarah M., Chloe B., and Anna M. provided consistent, and improved all around play.  Junior Herron H. took control of the net and contributed with solid offense.  Senior Erin C. played with great determination on the back row.  Senior leaders Becky G., Jessica C., Amaris B., and Katie C. provided great guidance and high standards for the team, making sure that we stayed focused and determined throughout the match.  Overall, it was a great team effort to accomplish our 3 main goals: 1. Play as a team, 2. Play with pride, 3. Apply our skills.  Congrats to the 2011 ISAL League and Playoff Champions, way to go team!!
