The Fall Panther Sports teams have posted more victories than ever before, with the undefeated Middle School Girls Volleyball team taking the championship at the Poly Prep Invitational last Saturday, the Varsity Girls Volleyball team winning the ISAL league and playoff championships this week, and our soccer and cross-country teams excelling in interscholastic play. Read more on the BFS website. THIS JUST IN: The 15-3 Varsity Girls Volleyball team won a berth in the NY State Independent Schools Championship Tournament next week versus Horace Mann. 

 

Your Loss Will Be A Big Gain to BFS Faculty and Staff

ticketsBFS families -- If you have subscriptions or tickets to the theater, cultural or sporting events that you can't use, or if you have a gift certificate that is expiring, please consider donating these items to the BFS  "First-Come, First-Serve" appreciation program for BFS faculty and staff. Since September, parents have donated Yankee, Broadway theater, NY Philharmonic, NYC Ballet, Little Orchestra and BAM tickets - and more - to a very grateful faculty. PAT Update

PAT Meeting -- Community at Its Best  

Monday night's PAT meeting meeting truly embodied the community that BFS is.  From the Preschool through the Upper School, parent turnout was great! Thank you to all who attended and continue to devote your time and attention to BFS.  In addition to introductions by the PAT Executive Committee and a detailed overview of the roles that are open for nominations (see "PAT Leadership Nomination Process" below), Taunya Black, Rachel Webber and BFS parent Pam Kiernan presented on the Horizons at BFS program and BFS's role as an innovator in NYC through its participation in and success with the program.  Larry Weiss, Head of School, also spoke - detailing BFS milestones including the growth of BFS, the Horizons at BFS program, our ongoing Quaker Self-Study and the success of the International Baccalaureate program in the Upper School, which last year saw all of its candidates complete the program and receive IB diplomas.

 

Fall Family Community Service Opportunity:  Work Day at Quaker Cemetery, Nov. 19 

The PAT Community Service Committee invites parents and students of all ages to join us for the annual Fall Work Day in the Quaker Cemetery, located in Prospect Park. Established in the mid-1800's, the 10 acre Cemetery pre-dates the founding of the park. Join us for a day of raking, planting, and getting the cemetery ready for the winter. This year's Work Day will be Saturday, November 19th; mark your calendars!      

 

Additional Volunteers Needed for Winter Festival -- Join Our Friday Morning Meetings! 

Many thanks to everyone who has attended our first few meetings and volunteered to help with all of the moving parts that go into making the Winter Festival great! We are still looking for a few more volunteers both for pre-event planning and for the day of the Winter Festival. In particular, we are inneed of volunteer photographers for the two days of the event, both to work in our Friendsapalooza photo booth Friday Night as well as to document all of the fun of the event itself.  As always, we will also gratefully accept toy and prize donations(more details as the event gets closer.) Child care will be provided for all parent volunteers on the day of the Winter Festival.

 

The Winter Festival is an exciting event full of fun for the entire BFS community and depends on parent volunteers for its success. We'll kick off the event on Friday, Dec. 2 withfestivalFriendsapalooza, the all-fun and music nighttime extravaganza for 8th through 12th grade students. Saturday's all-day event on Dec. 3 will feature the craft fair, craft-making for kids, an indoor carnival with bounce castles, face painting and entertainment galore, among other fun activities. If you are still looking for a fresh way to donate your time to BFS, your time and dedication are always appreciated. Join us at our next meeting, Friday, Nov. 4 at 8:30am in the Cafeteria. We will meet regularly on Fridays at 8:30am thereafter until the festival date. Craft Fair Vendor Registration: Parents receive a 15% discount on tables and faculty and staff receive a 50% discount. There will be space for approximately 45 vendors this year - get your application in! Additional details are on the Vendor Registration Form. Please contact Vendor Coordinator Sonia Ives with any questions.  

 

PAT Speaker Series, Tues. Nov. 8 (6pm Pre-Talk; 7 pm Program)
Kids and Food: Raising Smart Consumers and Ethical Eaters
Join us in conversation on how to make informed decisions about feeding your family, while engaging children in age-appropriate understanding of the ethical issues around how our food is grown, produced, and marketed.  As both food experts and parents, our speakers will share advice on how to balance our desires to buy local, go organic and support small farms with affordability, picky eaters and the realities of busy lives.

 

Featuring Melanie Rehak, BFS parent and author,  Eating for Beginners: An Education in the Pleasures of Food From Chefs, Farmers and One Picky KidDavid Becker, BFS parent and Founder, Friend of the Farmer; and Joel Hough, BFS parent and chef, il Buco.  BFS Chef Tom Buckley will provide opening remarks.Child care from 6 pm is available, but please sign up first with Cheryl at the front desk.  

 

PAT Leadership Nomination Process Has Begun
Spread the word! The PAT has begun accepting nominations for the positions of PAT President, Vice Presidents, Treasurer and Secretary. These are two-year positions, and role shadowing will begin in the late winter. If you are interested, know of someone who would be a great fit for one of these positions, or simply have questions, please contact Salome Galib, PAT President.  

 

Parents in the Spotlight: David Henry Hwang and Erminia Rivera 

Check out the New York Times' recent Arts profile of BFS parent David Hwang (Eva, gr. 5), Tony Award winning playwright whose works have encapsulated the ever-prominent issues in our society of multiculturalism, internationalism and the difficulties and nuances in our society created by cultural sensibilities. Known for his play M. Butterfly, David's latest play, Chinglish, is currently in preview performances on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre.  And congratulations to Erminia Rivera (Kevin, gr. 12), who is being honored on Nov. 3 by St. Joseph's College as 2011 Distinguished Citizen. A trustee of the college and a board member of Horizons at Brooklyn Friends School, Erminia is a business entrepreneur and philanthropist; she was recently appointed to serve as chair of the Maimonides Breast Cancer Center. 

 

School News You Can Use  

Thinking Mathematically: The Lower School is excited to launch the 2011-2012 Math Challenges! We hope many students will join the community in solving fun and challenging math problems. Read a fact sheet or go directly to the challenges here.  

 

Coffee Talk and School at Your Fingertips. Second grade parents have their coffee hour with Jackie Condie and Dr. Bruce Arnold this Monday, Oct. 31, 8:30 am in the Cafeteria. The third grade coffee hour is Monday, Nov. 7,  8:30 am and the fourth grade coffee hour is TBA, also in the Cafeteria. For Preschool Parents, the next coffee hour with Maura Eden is Nov. 8, 9 am on the second floor and Dr. Eddie Moore, Director  of Diversity, is the guest. Detailed information about the coffee hours and other parent events -- as well as classroom blogs -- are on the divisional portals. The portals are google sites and work best with the Safari, Firefox and Chrome browsers.

   

Shopping for a Good Cause: The annual 6th Grade Toy and Gift Drive for the children of St. John's Place Family Center and Shelter will run from Fri. Nov. 11-Dec. 2. Suggested donations are new items with a value of $10-20 for babies, toddlers, children, and teens. (No wrapping required; no electronics or items requiring batteries, please). Collection boxes are located in the lobby and on each floor, and gift-wrapping takes place during the Winter Festival on Dec. 3. The BFS Middle School has been working with this organization for many years and the gifts our community collects are often the only ones the children receive. Please be as generous as you can.

The wins just keep on coming! Our fall season teams, as of Oct. 26, posted 51 wins, 30 losses, and 3 ties.
 
Read about the amazing victories our volleyball, soccer and cross country teams achieved this past week on the BFS website. There are three more fall season games this week; come to cheer our athletes. All schedules are posted here.

 

The second session of AM Sports for 5th and 6th graders,Being an Effective Team Member, begins on Nov. 1. The program runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:15 to 7:55 a.m. See Coach Gary Lawson. Learn more.

The Friendly Flyers Youth Running Club will have a practice on Friday 11/4/11 at 3:00pm Cadman Plaza. Learn more about this and other PM sports on the BFS website.

 

Athletic schedules for all teams and all seasons are on the school website. We encourage parents and students (13 and over) to register with highschoolsports.net to get free e-mail updates whenever games or practices are canceled, postponed, or changed.

Quaker News

While BFS community members are welcome to attend Meeting for Worship at any time at the Brooklyn Monthly Meeting on Schermerhorn Street, the Meeting sets aside a special day in November to welcome to BFS and Mary McDowell Friends School families. This year's takes place on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, 11 am at the Meetinghouse, 110 Schermerhorn Street. Child care is provided, and a coffee and social hour follows Meeting for Worship. Invitation from Jim Morgan, clerk of Brooklyn Monthly Meeting.
