Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

This Friday and Saturday at BFS

A timeless story, fantastic music and dancing, and a talented, dedicated group of gr. 7-12 students all come together for the BFS fall musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. There will be three performances, 4 pm and 7 pm on Fri. 11/18/11 and 7 pm on Sat. 11/19/11. Please buy your tickets in advance from Cheryl at the front desk. See cast list and rehearsal photos.

 

Worship on Sunday, Visit and Work on Saturday  

A reminder that all members of the BFS community are invited to Meeting for Worship at Brooklyn Monthly Meeting on Sunday, 11/13 at 11 am and to the Work and Visiting Day at the Quaker Cemetery (in Prospect Park) on Sat. 11/19 from 10 am to 4 pm.  Invitation to Meeting for Worship and Flyer on Work Day at Quaker Cemetery

PAT Speaker Series: A Delicious Success 
We extend our warmest thanks to BFS parents and community members David Becker, Melanie Rehak, Tom Buckley, and Joel Hough, pictured, left to right, for a fabulous evening on food and feeding our families. As both food experts and parents, our speakers shared advice on how to balance our desires to buy local, go organic and support small farms with affordability, picky eaters and the realities of busy live. Fall Family Day of Service at Quaker Cemetery, Nov. 19 

The The PAT Community Service Committee invites parents and students of all ages to join us for the annual Fall Work Day in the Quaker Cemetery, located in Prospect Park, on Saturday November 19 from 10 am to 4 pm. Come for an hour or the whole day! Lunch will be provided. A sign up poster will be in the lobby next week - please sign up even if you're not 100% sure if you can be there.

   

Winter Festival Energy Grows-- Join Our Friday Morning Meetings! 

 We are proud to say thanks to all our volunteers for the Winter Festival! The energy is growing, and there are still areas where still more volunteers are needed. As an added benefit this year, childcare will be provided for all parent volunteers on the day of the Winter Festival!  Please contact committee Co-Chairs Louise Olive or Susan Ferugio if you can assist or donate in the following areas:

Manpower: Be on the lookout for a volunteer signup poster in the lobby next week. We'd especially love to see some Dads out there!

Wii Equipment: remotes, guitars, microphones, drums
Friendsapalooza Freebies for US students:  bracelets, lip gloss, necklaces, soaps, wallets, pens, etc.
Carnival Prizes for PS, LS and MS Students: snap bracelets, yo-yos, stickers, pencils, etc.: (great way to get rid of leftover birthday favors!):
Bingo Prizes: small games or toys, paperback books, new packages of markers or crayons, craft kits, cars/trucks, puzzles, coloring books
Arts & Crafts Event: Metal bottle caps-non-alcoholic (Izzy's or Fizzy Lizzy), yarn of any color, felt, feathers, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, tissue paper, fabric, a ream of white cardstock, washable stamp pads of any color, sharpies, paper for scrapbooking, baby wipes.
Photo Booth Event: Props, Costumes and Accessories ie boas, wigs, jewelry
Stylists for the Photo Booth: to help the kids prepare for their shoot!
Face Paint
Donate-A-Bracelet: for a Carnival experience for a Horizons child. Donations can be accepted in the Development Office.
Corporate Donations: Does your office want to donate to the Winter Festival?

Food Donations: These donations will be brought in on the days before the festival. Food recipes on BFS website: Cupcakes (not decorated), Macaroni and Cheese, Onion-dill Rice and Tofu, Vegetarian Chili.

 

All donations can be dropped off at the Development Office, attention Emily Cowles, during school hours. Be sure to clearly label items that will be returned to you. Join us at our next meeting, Friday, Nov. 18 at 8:30am in the Cafeteria. Please contact committee Co-Chairs Louise Olive or Susan Ferugio for more information.

 

PAT Leadership Nomination Process Continues
Spread the word! The PAT has begun accepting nominations for the positions of PAT President, Vice Presidents, Treasurer and Secretary. These are two-year positions, and role shadowing will begin in the late winter. If you are interested, know of someone who would be a great fit for one of these positions, or simply have questions, please contact Salome Galib, PAT President.  You may also do this anonymously by placing the nomination(s) in an envelope labeled "PAT Nomination" and giving it to Cheryl at the front desk.

School News You Can Use 

Minding our Ps and Qs with Tuition and Financial Aid 

Every year the BFS Business Office mails a letter to all families outlining re-enrollment policies and providing information on the BFS Financial Aid program. In fairness to all, we ask everyone to abide by the policies and deadlines. For easy reference, a copy of that letter is on the BFS website.

 

Preschool and Lower School Thanksgiving Programs . . .

take place on Tues. Nov. 22 at the Brooklyn Monthly Meetinghouse, 110 Schermerhorn Street, and parents are invited to attend. The times are 10:30 am for preschool, 1:00 pm for Kindergarten and Grade 1, and 2:00 pm for Grades 2, 3, and 4.

Congratulations, Math Wizards!  

The following lower school students completed the Math Challenge and Super Challenge of Oct. 31, 2011. KC - Sophia. 1A - Ryan, Erika.1B - Sophia, Zach, Elijah. 1C - Ilan, Baurice. 2B - Bijou, Yamila. 3A - Danielle, Oscar. 4A - Henry, Sebastian, Holly, Anya, Susan, Milly, Gus, Sam, Ty, Kennedy, Jesse, Salma B., Coby, Violet, Finn, Salma M., Thomas, Nora, Isabel, Gabe, Max, Aja . 4B - Krish, Jack. New Challenges are regularly posted on the Lower School Mathematics Blog. Encourage your children to participate!   

 

Shopping for a Good Cause: The annual 6th Grade Toy and Gift Drive for the children of St. John's Place Family Center and Shelter will run from Fri. Nov. 11-Dec. 2. Suggested donations are new items with a value of $10-20 for babies, toddlers, children, and teens


Sports Section 

Four Upper School Basketball Teams are practicing and working hard gearing up for the upcoming season. MS Boys and Girls Basketball teams begin on Wed. Nov. 16. Basketball Games start after Thanksgiving Weekend.  Please come down to the lower gym to cheer on our teams and wonderful student-athletes.  Go Panthers!! All BFS sports schedules are on the school website.  

Boys & Girls Varsity Indoor Track has begun practicing.  They will start using the beautiful Park Slope Brooklyn Armory on Monday's and Wednesday's for practice starting next week

On 11/9/11 all the BFS Winter Upper School Student-Athletes participated in a "Blue Pride Day" with Tomas Anthony. A BFS parent and alumnus, Tomas is a founder of Everyday Athlete in Brooklyn. Winter "Blue Pride Day" for MS Student-Athletes will take place on Wednesday 11/16/11 after the team meetings.

THE FACULTY VOLLEYBALL GAME (photos below) took place on Wednesday 11/9/11 in the upper gym. Fun was had by all who participated: Larry Weiss, Valarie Alston, Trefor Davies, Cassie Broadus Foote, David Gardella, John Hay, Karima Hassan, Marna Herrity, Aziz Khan, Blake Sills, Angelika Trojanowski, Molly WInter, Julie Webber. Thanks to the fans who brought the energy with some great cheering and our volleyball players who took over as officials, score keepers, and lines people.  Blue Pride!!

The second session of AM Sports for 5th and 6th graders, Being an Effective Team Member, has begun and new participants are welcome. Time -Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:15 to 7:55 a.m. in the lower gym. BFS and Mary McDowell Friends School families join Brooklyn Monthly Meeting for Meeting for Worship on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, 11 am at the Meetinghouse, 110 Schermerhorn Street. Child care is provided, and a coffee and social hour follows Meeting for Worship. Friends will join together for FALL VISITING AND WORK DAY at the Quaker Cemetery in Prospect Park on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2001, 10 am to 4 pm. Tours are open to the public and will be given at noon and 2 pm.
