BIG CHANGES ON PEARL STREET WILL AFFECT PARENTS WHO DRIVE TO SCHOOL
New York City agencies will begin extensive underground construction work on Pearl Street from Fulton Street to our school block and on the Willoughby pedestrian plaza (that begins on Pearl Street and swings around Adams Street) starting as early as Monday, Nov. 28. Please read theofficial announcement of this project. With work of this scope, vehicular traffic on our block and on Willoughby Street (btw Pearl and Jay) will need to be limited to emergency vehicles, and we regret that parents will no longer be able to bring their cars on these streets. We are working to secure alternate drop-off/pick-up sites nearby and will inform you when the sites are confirmed. The PAT plans to form a volunteer group to help at drop-off/ pick-up times, and BFS administrators are in regular contact with city officials to minimize disruptions to our school community. We will be communicating with parents regularly through E-News and with printed information sheets at the Front Desk as the project gets underway; we also are taking measures to insure there are no disruptions to Friendsapalooza and Winter Festival on Dec. 2 and 3. If you have specific concerns, please send an e-mail and we'll get back to you.
QUAKER SELF STUDY
The BFS Quaker Self-Study Committee is pleased to announce that four meetings for parents will be held in January 2012 centered around discussion of the book A Quaker Book of Wisdom by Robert Lawrence Smith. Head of School Larry Weiss will lead the discussions along with a member of the Self-Study Committee. Copies of the book will be on sale at the Book Fair during the Winter Festival on Dec. 3, and a small "lending library" will be maintained by Cheryl at the front desk starting Nov. 28. An E-invitation will be extended to all parents at the beginning of December. Dates and details.

Buying (and Eating) Locally
Tom Buckley, BFS Chef Manager, opened the PAT Speaker Series program, "Kids & Food" on November 8. The Cafeteria's 600 meals per day feature a wide array of fresh, organic, and healthy choices. Like all of us in the audience last week, Tom was inspired to act on the advice of our panelists to buy local whenever we can. The next day, Tom reported back: "This morning, I strolled the greenmarket at Borough Hall, checking out products, prices, and meeting farmers. Next Tuesday, I plan to head over there again, with a shopping list and a stack of bills. It looks like it may be possible to offer at least some local produce in our school lunches for a portion of the year."
Cheers to healthy, local eating!
PAT Leadership Nomination Process Continues
The PAT has begun accepting nominations for the positions of PAT President, Vice Presidents, Treasurer and Secretary. These are two-year positions, and role shadowing will begin in the late winter. If you are interested, know of someone who would be a great fit for one of these positions, or simply have questions, please contact Salome Galib, PAT President. You may also do this anonymously by placing the nomination(s) in an envelope labeled "PAT Nomination" and giving it to Cheryl at the front desk.

Quaker News
On the last Sunday of every month, [next: Nov. 27, 2011] Brooklyn Monthly Meeting (BMM) of the Religious Society of Friends holds its monthly community dinner for people in need, at the meetinghouse (110 Schermerhorn Street). BFS families are always welcome to donate food or volunteer to help. Sunday is when the bulk of the work happens: (1pm - set up and food prep, 3pm - our meal is served, 4:30pm - clean up. We always welcome donations of clean, seasonal, gently used clothing. Adult clothing is in higher demand than children's clothing and more men attend than women. But if you drop it off, we'll find a good home for it. Location: 110 Schermerhorn Street. For more info, please contact BMM volunteer Andres Colapinto.
