Highlights from the Week of Nov. 28, 2011 |
| |
|
11/29/11 On Monday the BFS Girls Varsity Basketball team
opened up its season by defeating Winston Prep 31-18 at Polytechnic
Institute of NYU. Both teams started off slow and tried to shake off
the rust from a long off season. BFS took a 4-2 lead into the second
quarter. Junior guard/ forward Janna J. helped BFS take control in the
second quarter. The low scoring 12-6 halftime score was due to the
teams playing their first game of the season, the gym being hot due to
the unseasonable warm weather, and the length of the regulation court.
Winston Prep hung and kept things close most of the way. BFS was able
to keep the lead after three quarters with a score of 17-13. Janna
finished with a game high 18 points (coming off 263 points during her
sophomore campaign). Sophomore Julia G. added 9 points, while junior
Hanyang and sophomore Sophie A. contributed 2 points a piece. the 31-18
victory was a great start for the girls team as they are rebuilding
from graduating five seniors (4 starters). Blue Pride!!
12/1/11 On Wednesday the BFS Girls Varsity Basketball team
defeated St. Ann's on the road in a hard fought battle 43-38. It was a
back forth game throughout as BFS took an early 14-10 lead after one
quarter, then St. Ann's took an 18-16 lead into the half. The girls
came out strong in the second half and regained the lead 30-24 after
three quarters of play. BFS opened things up by playing a different
type of defense and were able to take a 37-26 lead, but St. Ann's was
not done and had the homecourt advantage with the crowd behind them.
BFS lost two starters to foul trouble and things got pretty close at the
end. Holding onto a 3 point lead Janna J. who played a very strong
second half (14 points) was able to drive to the basket to give BFS the
final bucket they needed for the 43-38 win. Janna led the way for all
scorers with 23 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, and 3 blocks. Sophomore
Julia G. had 9 points, including 2 three pointers, while juniors Herron
H. had 6 points, Danielle E. 3 points, and sophomore Sophie A. chipped
in a basket. This local rivalry has really heated up over the years and
both teams are lacking seniors so we look forward to more battles on
the court in the future.
The BFS Boys Varsity Basketball team
defeated LFNY by the score of 56-40 in the lower gym. It was a close
game until the final quarter. BFS lead by as much as 22 points in the
game. Senior Dylan S. led the team with 23 points, 3 rebounds, and 2
steals. It was a real team effort. Newcomer Nathan J. had an overall
good game in his first BFS action with 12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals,
and a block. Jared L. scored 6 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, while
senior Kevin R. 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists. Olabanji
S. chipped in with 4 points, 4 steals, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Senior Erez M. scored 4 points and had 5 rebounds, while fellow senior
Spencer Morenko had one point but was able to grab 7 boards while
picking up a steal and an assist. At the end of the third quarter, the
score was 40-32 BFS, but the combination of Dylan, Olabanji, and Nathan
pushed the Panthers on a 10-0 run to up the lead to 50-32 and out of
reach for the opponent. It is a great start for the team. Blue Pride!!
The BFS Girls JV team
defeated St. Ann's 18-13 in the season opener yesterday. Both teams
started off a bit slow, having trouble knocking down shots. At the end
of the first quarter St. Ann's was in the lead by a score of 4-0. The
small court made it difficult for both teams to open things up and
score. At the end of the half the score was St. Ann's 7 and BFS 4. At
the start of the second half BFS came out with a strong aggressive
defense which helped let them take the lead, ending the third quarter
with a score of BFS 11 and St. Ann's 10. BFS continued to use a full
court press throughout the fourth quarter. Sarah M. helped lead BFS
with 6 steals. The mixture of BFS's quick guards helped shut down St.
Ann's offensive flow in the fourth quarter. Chloe B. had a game high 11
points. Julia B. had 3 points, while Sarah M. and Maret S-M each
chipped in with 2 points. It was a great start for the young team.
12/2/11 On Thursday the BFS Girls Varsity Basketball team
took the court for its home opener vs. league opponent Garden. This
has become a great rivalry over the years with numerous close contests.
The game actually started with not one fan in the gym, but by the time
the final buzzer sounded the gym was packed and the crowd witnessed an
extremely exciting early season match-up. BFS not knowing what to
expect this season with the loss of 5 seniors (4 starters) from last
years extremely strong team of 8 players got off to a slow start, but so
did Garden. It was close game throughout the first half until Garden
opened up a 17-12 lead as the the halftime buzzer approached. BFS was
able to get some quick scoring before that horn sounded and went into
the half all tied up at 17. The team made some adjustments at the half
and switched defenses which enabled BFS to take a 24-18 lead into the
final period. Junior standout Janna J. picked up her fourth foul and
went to the bench with about 6 minutes to play. Sophomore Julia G. did
her best to hold it down with her oncourt teammates. The BFS lead was
just one point at 24-23 and Janna was still on the bench. Garden made
the go ahead basket and with about 4 minutes it was time to re-enter
Janna before it was two late. A few more adjustments were made, but BFS
found itself down 27-24 for a couple minutes. After a few baskets here
and there for both sides and with a home crowd on the edge of their
seats, BFS was able to settle down. The team played solid defense and
used two late timeouts on offense to call two different plays late in
the game that the girls ran to perfection. BFS was able to close Garden
out in exciting fashion (they missed a five foot baseline jumper at the
buzzer that would have tied the game) as Janna scored 5 points in the
final quarter and Julia scored 3 points to give BFS the very exciting
32-30 victory. Janna once again led the way for BFS with a game high 16
points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 blocks (Janna was held scoreless in
the 1st Q). Her teammate Julia also had 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 4
steals. These two dynamic players scored all the BFS points today, but
this 3-0 start to the season can be attributed to all involved, Sidney,
Mimi, Sophie, Hanyang, Danielle, Herron, and Sofia. Go Team!! We are
no 3-0 and 1-0 in league play, not bad for rebuilding year (There are no
seniors on the team). |
