On Wednesday the BFS Boys & Girls Varsity Indoor Track team competed in a meet at the 168th Street Armory. It was two for one night for the Brooklyn Friends boys and girls track and field team last night. Each athlete ran the 600M and 300M double. The evening was a nice demonstration of the athletes work over the winter break and dedication to their sport. The first race of the evening was the long sprint 600m. Shani P. just missed cracking the 2:00 minute barrier with a strong second place finish in her heat (5th place overall) with a time of 2:00.43. Lotte W. ran another gutsy race and took on the top seeded runners in her competitive heat. She finished with a time of 2:02.80 (8th place), while Clara S. took on the 600m for the first time and ran a strong time of 2.08.58 (11th place). There were 26 total runners in this race.
On the boys side, Misha H. ran in his first meet for the track team this winter. His initial desire to run the 60 meter sprint was vetoed by Coach Brown. Undaunted, Misha ran an excellent and brave 1:39.06 for his first 600m. He placed 15th out of 39 total runners. He can’t wait to run another 600m now that he knows it is his race to conquer. Jose U., with the motivation of Bruce Lee quotes, embraced his 600m race and ran an impressive time of 1:45.52. He placed 20th out of 39 total runners. Sufficiently tired, the athletes lined up for the 300m only forty minutes after their 600m races. Most had glazed eyes and trepidation but the next races were as fine as their earlier performances. Lotte ran a time of 50.53 (20th place), Shani ran a time of 50.83 (22nd place), Clara ran a time of 53.12 out of 51 total runners. Misha ran a time of 43.73. good for 20th place out of 60 total runners. Jose U. ran a time of 44.18, good for 23rd place. Each athlete should be proud of their efforts for the evening. Blue Pride!!

On Thursday the BFS JV Girls Basketball team defeated Mary McDowell at Polytech. BFS played an excellent game. Both teams fought long and hard but BFS came out victorious. At the end of the 1st quarter the score was BFS-10 and Mary McDowell 0. The second quarter was a very low scoring quarter for both teams with a score of BFS-12 and Mary McDowell 0. At the start of the second half BFS continued to find easy scoring opportunities on the fast break. Freshman Julia B. did an excellent job rebounding the ball on the defensive end. She also set up her teammates with a number of scoring chances by using the long baseball pass. At the end of the 3rd quarter the score was BFS-24 Mary McDowell 3. The leading scorer of the game was Julia B. who finished with a game high 17 points. Chloe B. was the second leading scorer with 4 points.
The BFS MS Girls Basketball team defeated BWL 18-14 in the lower gym, earning their first win for the season. Abbie M. led the way with 10 points for BFS and to Nicola M., Sophie S., Jesse I. and Naomi M. for contributing crucial shots. With just seven players, the girls displayed great teamwork, spirit, and played strong defense to pull out the win. The game was tied going into the final quarter. Congratulations to the players and the coaches!!
The BFS Girls Varsity Basketball team came up a bit short losing on the road to UNIS 27-25 in overtime. The team came out strong in the first quarter playing very aggressive on both ends, but missed too many lay-ups which came back to haunt them. The Girls had a 14-8 halftime lead after both teams struggling in the second quarter. BFS played well in the third quarter and was still out in front. Janna J. once again did most of the scoring for BFS. She poured in a game high 21 points. The girls struggled on offense during the fourth quarter and UNIS was able to knock down some shots to close the gap. BFS was up one point (23-22) with less than 15 seconds to play. UNIS went to the foul line and missed the first and made the second free throw to tie the game. BFS had a couple of chances at the end of regulation, but they continued to get a good flow going on offense. Tied at 23 the game moved into the overtime period. Janna J. went for a loose ball about 20 seconds into the overtime period and she went down to the ground. She needed to come out of the game and UNIS took full advantage by scoring 2 quick baskets. With about two and half minutes to play in the extra period, down 27-23, BFS put Janna back in and she regrouped and was able to get to the basket for a score to pull BFS within two with around a minute and a half to play. Once again, BFS had a couple of opportunities on the offensive end and even missed a point blank range layup that would have tied it up. BFS did take the final shot of the game and it came just short as hit the front rim and buzzer sounded on BFS. Chalk it up as a learning experience. We will get them next time.
