Highlights from the Week of Jan. 9, 2012
1/10/12
On Monday the BFS Boys & Girls Varsity Track team participated in another meet.  A brave group of four Brooklyn Friends boys and girls track and field athletes returned to the 168th St. Armory for their second race in five days.  The athletes’ focus was to perform well in a single event rather than the challenge of a double.  The results followed the script.

Giovanna M. ran an excellent 1000m race.  She won her heat with a time of 3.46.84.  Giovanna led the race from the crack of the gun.  Her front running style demoralized the competition.  The competition attempted to surge past Giovanna at the 600m mark but she repelled them with a great finishing kick over the last 200m of the race.  She finished 8th overall out of 21 total runners.

Misha H. and Jose U. found their sprint speed in the 300m.  Each runner improved their times by over four seconds from the meet on January 4th.  Misha finished in 9th place with a time of 42.50, while Jose finished in 15th place with a time of 43.80, out of 42 total runners.  Greater familiarity of the race distance and facility catapulted the runners to their excellent improvements.  One cannot improve fitness in five days.  Misha and Jose digested the nuances of their past performances and earned strong results for their focus on the race.  It will be fun to see how they improve with some hard training over the next few weeks.  Misha also competed in the 55m dash finishing in 15th place with a time of 7.56, out of 62 total runners.

Shani P. and Elinor H. took on the area’s best runners in the competitive first heat of the 600m.  Elinor ran a time of 2:01.15 finishing in 12th place, while Shani was right behind with a time of 2:01.95 finishing in 13th place, out of 31 total runners.  Each athlete ran strong, but respectively showed signs of fatigue from the previous race and a slight illness earlier in the week.  Nevertheless, Elinor shook off the cobwebs and won her heat in ran a nice 300m dash.  Elinor finished with a time of 49.70 coming in 16th place out of 48 total runners.  Sometimes a good hard race is a setup for an even better second race.  The athletes did well.  It is a long, cold ride out to the Armory, and a long afternoon/evening for our student-athletes.  The runners should be acknowledged for their commitment and competitive spirit.
