CELEBRATING THE AFRO LATINO EXPERIENCE
The 17th Annual African American Celebration is coming to BFS on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012. This year's theme is "The Afro Latino Experience" and there is a full program of activities for all. As an added bonus, the program is dedicated to Spanish teacher and BFS grandparent Norma Gordon (pictured). View an interview with volunteer parent Alisa Martin Granderson, get a video preview of guest performers Folklore Urbano, sign up to volunteer, and purchase tickets -- all on the BFS website.

COME TO THE UPPER SCHOOL PLAY, THIS FRI. & SAT 
Upper School Thespians present The Rover, directed by Catherine Clark, on Fri, Jan. 27 and Sat. Jan. 28, both at 7 pm, in the BFS Meetinghouse. An English Restoration period play by Aphra Behn, The Rover features multiple plot lines dealing with the amorous adventures of a group of English men and women in Naples at Carnival time. The playwright (1640-1689) was one of the first English women to earn their living by writing. Tickets ($10/adults and $5/students) at the front desk.

SEEKING THE WISDOM OF PARENTS 
Please go online to RSVP to one of the three upcoming discussions on A Quaker Book of Wisdom, which will be facilitated by Head of School Larry Weiss and a member of the Quaker Self-Study Committee. The three dates are Jan 24, 6:30 pm at the Family Center, 189 Schermerhorn St;  Jan. 25, 8:30 am in the BFS Pearl Street Library; and Jan. 26, 6 pm, at a BFS family's home in Boerum Hill. . NOTE: If you signed up online, your first choice is confirmed. You will receive another e-mail confirmation two or three days before the event.

Volunteer for the African American Celebration Feb. 3, 2012 

Latin American dishes! A capoeira demonstration! A performance! A dance selection by BFS students! AND our special guest artists, the Colombian band Folklore Urbano. This year we consider the wide expanse of nations in the Caribbean, Central America and South America that, like the U.S., have their own histories that include the stories, culture and contributions of African descendants. Preschool and Kindergarten Parents -- Helping Your Child Get Ready for Reading 
Don't miss the "Rhymes and Reasons" PS and K workshop with reading specialist Barbara RIngel on Thurs. Feb. 2, 9 to 10 am in the third floor conference room. Language play is widely believed to be an essential preliminary ingredient in paving the way for a successful experience in reading. The workshop will explore the concept of phonemic awareness and will include a variety of practical activities for school and home that will enhance a child's ability to play with language.

Preschool - Gr. 4 Parents: Register Now for Spring Camp 
Forms for the Afterschool Program's Spring Camp (March 19-23) are here. Enrollment is on a first-come, first serve basis. 

Coffee Talk with Jackie and Bruce 
Save these dates for Lower School Coffee Hours, all beginning at 8:30 am in the Cafeteria (section opposite the kitchen) to meet with fellow parents, Lower School Head Jackie Condie and consulting psychologist Bruce Arnold. We'll check in with one another and talk about developmental changes and challenges typical for each grade.

Expert to Talk on Transracial Adoptions, Identity, and Empowerment 
On Tues. Feb. 7, 5 to 7pm, all members of the BFS community are invited to a workshop with Professor John Palmer of Colgate University. He is the author of Dance of Identities, Korean Adoptees and Their Journey Toward Empowerment. Himself a Korean adoptee, Professor Palmer will be visiting BFS on Feb. 7 and 8, meeting with students, faculty and staff, and presenting at assemblies for middle and upper school students. ...but you can plan wisely. On Thursday, February 9 at 8:30 am, BFS will host The 5 Things You Should NOT Do with Your Estate Plans (and the 5 You Should): an estate planning seminar with BFS Trustee and alum Richard Cutler, Esq. SPORTS SECTION 
Athletic schedules for all teams and all seasons are on the school website. We encourage parents and students (13 and over) to register with highschoolsports.net  to get free e-mail updates whenever games or practices are canceled, postponed, or changed.

Read about the amazing victories our basketball teams achieved this past week on the BFS website.  And don't miss out on catching a basketball home game in our lower gym -- there are 6 teams and a game is played almost every day; stop by to cheer on our teams, or travel with our indoor track athletes as they represent BFS interscholastically. All schedules are here.

The BFS Friendly Flyers Youth Running Club had their first practice in the Park Slope Armory on Wednesday as they gear up for a Meet there on Sat. Jan. 21, 5 to 9 pm. Learn more about the Friendly Flyers program on the BFS website.

   

Learning from a Sports Legend: Sue Wicks, former WNBA NY Liberty superstar, Rutgers MVP, Pan American Games gold medalist, and collegiate coach will visit BFS on Monday 1/23/12 to talk to and work out with our MS, JV, and Varsity Girls Basketball Players from 3:30 pm-4:30 pm in the upper gym.

Let's Go BFS: The Upper School Winter Pep Rally will take place on Friday 1/27/12 at 11:30 am in the lower gym.

Spring is in the air: The BFS Spring Season will kick off on Fri. 2/24/12 with US Team Meetings Afterschool.  Go here for starting dates for our spring softball, baseball, track and volleyball teams.

BFS community members are welcome to attend Meeting for Worship at any time at the Brooklyn Monthly Meeting (BMM) on 110 Schermerhorn Street, Sundays, 11 am. Child care is provided, and a coffee and social hour follows Meeting for Worship. On the last Sunday of every month (upcoming: Jan. 29) BMM holds a community dinner for people in need, at the meetinghouse. BFS families are always welcome to donate food or volunteer to help. For more info, please contact BMM volunteer Andres Colapinto.
