The All-school Art Show
During the week of May 16-21, the Lower Gym was transformed into
a spectacular gallery that showcased the work of BFS students (toddlers
through seniors) for the annual All-school Art Show. This
year, the bleachers were packed with art aficionados. No wait,
those weren’t art fans; they were the “Big
People” paintings created by first graders and installed
just above the bleachers.
The 2003 The All-school Art Show offered a true celebration of
the visual arts in all media and genres. There were works created
in watercolor, acrylic, oil, tempera, wood, clay, terra-cotta,
paper, seeds and beans, found objects, Plexiglas, plaster, papier
mache, photography, and wire. There were studies of Cubism, the
still life and self portraits by middle
schoolers and upper schoolers.
There were assemblages inspired by artist
Joseph Cornell and Egyptian art carvings
on plaster tablets.
There were pet painting created by second
graders, and collaborative collages
created by upper schoolers. Gorgeous ceramics grew out of
our remarkable ceramics program.
(The ceramics program was featured
on WNYE this year.)
There was “stained glass”,
and there were works inspired by artists including Roy
Lichtenstein, Georgia O’Keeffe,
and Matisse.
Playful, creative projects were transformed from raw materials
by our preschoolers. (Preschooler
art is also showcased each year in the
Brooklyn Heights Branch Public Library.) And functional and
whimsical pieces were created in woodshop.
If you missed the celebration, here’s a “digital
art show” to give you a flavor of the real thing.
