Exchanges

Spring Break in Mexico
by Jeffrey Stanley

Once again this year, Middle School Spanish teacher Michael Kabot took a group of 8th graders on an exchange trip to the picturesque city of Guanajuato, Mexico over spring break. This year 17 students made the trip, which was also chaperoned by Middle School/Upper School ceramics teacher Ellen Kahan and her husband Alejandro, a native Mexican. They traveled to Guanajuato to participate in a 10-day exchange with the private school Colegio Valenciana. This is the fourth year that the program has been in place and the second year for Kabot. “It was begun by my predecessor, Dana Catharine, who lived in Guanajuato for several years and had the contacts to make it happen,” Kabot explains.

Kabot describes their experience in an email dispatch from Mexico: “When we arrive there we are met by the director of the school and some students and teachers and then we are brought to a plaza near the school where the BFS kids meet the families they will stay with. While our boys and girls are there they are adopted members of those families who show them overwhelming hospitality and care.

“Each school day there are activities at the school or elsewhere in the city with the students of Colegio Valenciana. Among the activities this year were a tour of the major sites of the city, an ecological expo at the school, a recital of Mexican music at the Universidad de Guanajuato, a scavenger hunt throughout the city that was designed to help our students get to know the Mexican students and the city itself, a pool party at a country club outside the city, and an international fair at the primary school of Colegio Valenciana. On the weekends the families spent time with our students and took them to their favorite places.”

In April, the exchange program will be completed when students and teachers from Colegio Valenciana visit BFS. Kabot, Middle School Head Joan Rappaport, and a committee of 8th grade parents have arranged for host families and planned activities for the students in and out of school.

ackworth exchange

Exchange with the Ackworth School

This week BFS welcomed ten students from the Ackworth School, a Quaker school in Yorkshire, England. The students have been busy visiting classes with their BFS guides and touring New York City with faculty and staff. Special thanks to those BFS families who are hosting Ackworth students during their stay. Ten BFS students will visit Ackworth in June as part of this new exchange program.
