Building Bridges:
The 2004 Bridge Film Festival
There were no searchlights illuminating the night sky, but on
Saturday,
April 17, the cognoscenti of the Quaker filmmaking world were at
BFS for
the
opening of the fifth annual Bridge Film Festival.
The festival officially began earlier in the day with participants
attending one of three filmmaking workshops with noted instructors.
Following dinner at a local restaurant, a group of more than 100
students, advisors, and friends converged on the BFS Meeting House
for the screening
of
11 finalist films and two public service announcements from eight
other
Quaker schools in the United States and England.
After a period of deliberation, the panel of four guest judges
announced
the results. The Upper School grand prize winner was “An
Outlet Through
Words,” a striking video poem submitted by the George
School in Newtown,
PA, created by Brian Richardson and Alex
Herman, with Scott
Hoskins as advisor.
“A Few Good Quakers,” created by BFS students Issac
Diebbol and Daniel
Nicolas, took home the trophy for best film, Middle School division. BFS
was
also the winner of Best Public Service Announcement, with the entry “Kindness
Works,” a very funny animated spot created by Kevin
Fertig, Natalie Grybauskes, Ryan Ladouccur, Benjamin Lipton, Elie Sidman, David
Villalba, and Nicholas Wheatley-Schaller. Andy Cohen, director
of the festival, served as their advisor.
A highlight of the festival was a short talk by filmmaker Peter
Hedges,
a resident of Brooklyn, whose most recent film, “Pieces of
April,” was
nominated for an Academy Award®. Hedges applauded the young
filmmakers for
the quality of their work, and urged them to continue to “tell your stories
with passion and you can’t go wrong.”
