| Summer
Camp Concludes With Heritage Luncheon
by Jeffrey Stanley
This year’s Summer Camp was marked with a new ending which
is probably destined to become an annual event, the Heritage
Luncheon, in which families of students brought in a variety
of dishes reflecting their own unique cultures.
The luncheon was conceived by Assistant Head Teacher and BFS alum Vanessa
Wrann ’01, who has spent the past five summers working
at the Summer Camp. “I just thought it would be fun to
bring the whole summer camp together for an event,” she
said, and a meal made up of “food that the children and
their families enjoyed eating” seemed like a good excuse
for the parents to gather and meet each other.
Wrann pitched her idea for a Heritage Luncheon to Karine, Head
Teacher in the blue room, who liked the idea. “She really
helped a lot and thought of ways to make the lunch go smoothly,” said
Wrann. The other teachers and their assistants in the other rooms
also liked the plan. Wrann said the children and their families
responded “really positively” to their proposal. Indeed,
a majority of the families participated in the event, preparing
their favorite dishes at home and bringing them in for the international
potluck meal held in the cafeteria.
“There was noodle kugel [a baked pudding traditionally eaten
by Jews on the Sabbath], Italian dishes and pastries, and Greek
cheese pies. Then we had the favorites like mac and cheese, pastas,
fruit salads, chicken nuggets, and pigs in a blanket.”
In addition, there were plenty of homemade international desserts,
plus a big box of goodies from Dunkin’ Donuts, a heritage
all of the kids could arguably claim to share.
