Alumnus Karim Camara Takes
Office as State Assemblyman
A delegation from Brooklyn Friends School were among the special
guests when alumnus Karim Camara ’88 took the oath
of office as New York State Assemblyman on January 12 at Brooklyn’s
historic Borough Hall. Head of School Michael
Nill (at right, with Karim), Alumni Director
Susan Price ’86, and Upper School students Jamal
Davis ’07 and Nishanthy
Anthonypillai ’07 (right, bottom) were among the 200
guests who witnessed the ceremony.
Michael Nill, in his role as invited speaker, told the audience
that the lessons learned at Brooklyn Friends—particularly
the emphasis on ethical values and active listening—would
help the new assemblyman be “the kind of public servant we
so desperately need.” Karim represents the 43rd Assembly
District in Crown Heights.
Michael said that Karim was a gifted public speaker even in high
school and that this talent had served him well in his callings
as a pastor, a non-profit executive, and now as an elected official.
Karim’s mother, Ora Abdur-Razzaq, also spoke. The founder
and principal of Cush Campus Schools in Crown Heights, Ms. Abdur-Razzaq
recalled the positive impact that BFS had on Karim and applauded
the school’s leadership in education.
A graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, Karim
has a master's degree in divinity from the New York Theological
Seminary. He has worked for the American Red Cross and Cush Campus
Schools and is the executive pastor of the First Baptist Church
of Crown Heights. In August 2005, Karim married Orelia Merchant,
an assistant United States attorney in Brooklyn.
