Boys Varsity Basketball
Team Drives to Championship Game
The BFS Boys Varsity Basketball team closed out
the regular season with two big league wins and gathered momentum
for a playoff run. Seeded #5, the team was able to knock off Dwight
in overtime of the quarterfinals on Feb. 24 and then took on #2
seed Berkeley Carroll the next day. Junior
star forward Jamal Davis led the way again with 23 points and BFS
had a triumphant win over Berkeley Carroll 50-44. Junior
sharpshooter Ed Rodriguez made several key contributions to the
team both in the regular season and the playoffs. It was a whirlwind
weekend and one of the most exciting times in recent Panther sports
history.
At the championship game against Friends Seminary on Feb. 27,
the Panthers made a noble stand and lost to their Manhattan friends
by a score of 47-36. This gutsy team was coached by veteran Vlad
Malukoff, who had coached the boys varsity to a state
victory in 2003 with now-collegiate players Kyle Neptune and Edson
Elcock. There
were five seniors on the 2006 team—David
Bess, Tim Gagnay, Zev Sohne, Mohammed Tushar, and Craig
Weinberg—who gave
their all to the team and represented BFS in an exemplary manner.
As Coach Malukoff told the Upper School on March 2, “Our
season was more than just about basketball. It was about being
a member of a team, learning about respect and how to work together,
and striving towards a goal, striving towards excellence. These
are goals and lessons that every student can be working towards.”
Now it’s once season down, the next to go. “Varsity
and middle school teams in softball and baseball have already begun
to practice,” reports Athletic Director David Gardella, “And
everyone is invited to the BFS Varsity Baseball game vs. Nazareth
High School at Keyspan Park in Coney Island on Monday, April 17,
2006.” (Details will be shared soon.) Keep up to date with
Panther sports all the time by visiting our online
