A Double-Header
in October
PAT Lecture Series Off and Running with Donna Goldberg and
Sara Lawrence Lightfoot.
The Brooklyn Friends School PAT (Parent and Teacher) Association
is proud to launch a Speaker Series for Parents, with two lectures
this month. (See more PAT news.)

Lecture 1:
DONNA GOLDBERG
Author of The Organized Student
Monday, October 17, 2005
7 pm @ the Meeting House, 375 Pearl Street
Organization and time management are fundamental skills for students,
just as they are for adults. These skills need to be taught and
reinforced in a way that encourages kids to discover the systems
and tools that work best for them. Donna Goldberg will introduce
these principles, together with hands-on lessons, to parents, teachers
and anyone else who is invested in helping students develop their
full potential. Children in middle and upper school are welcome
to attend; we’ll provide childcare for younger kids.

Lecture 2:
PROFESSOR SARA LAWRENCE-LIGHTFOOT
Author of The Essential Conversation: What Teachers and Parents
Can Learn from Each Other
Thursday, October 27, 2005
7 pm @ the Meeting House, 375 Pearl Street
Acclaimed educator and author Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot explores
the intricacies of the parent-teacher conference, a dialogue that
takes place more than one hundred million times a year across this
country. Professor Lawrence-Lightfoot contends that this conversation
is both a mirror of and metaphor for the larger cultural forces
that shape children’s development, and that the relationship
between parents and teachers is complex and intense, even in the
most decorous and polite of meetings. Come hear Professor Lawrence-Lightfoot
talk about how to improve family-school relationships. A question-and-answer
session will follow her talk, along with a book signing.
