“Walk to Lend a Hand” Raises $11,000
for Katrina Families
More than 300 BFS community members participated in Walkathon
around Cadman Plaza Park on Sunday, Nov. 20. The group raised
$11,000 (and counting) for children and families affected by
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Donations were directed to two organizations:
Praxis Housing Initiatives, a nonprofit organization working
with relocated families in New York City, and New Orleans West,
a K-8th grade KIPP (Knowledge is Power) charter school, which
has been temporarily relocated to Houston, Texas.
Children of all ages took part in the walk on a beautiful, clear,
and sunny autumn day in New York. Babies in strollers and several
canine friends accompanied the crowd through the civic center and
around the park, stopping for a moment to take a giant group photo
on the court steps. Many families came back to school to participate
in craft activities (greeting cards and friendship bracelets for
the KIPP students) and to enjoy an afternoon of snacks and fellowship. “The
energy was high, the turnout was fantastic, the flow and quality
of the activities was wonderful,” reported Carla Precht,
fourth grade parent and BFS Community Service Coordinator. “The
older students did a good job helping, and everything seemed to
go very smoothly.” Carla joined Head of School Michael
Nill in appaudling the exemplary volunteerism of the PAT—President Lisa
Sack, Community Service Chair Helen White—and
the many parent leaders and parent volunteers for whom this event
was a labor of love and compassion. (Read
Lisa Sack’s thank-you letter to the BFS community.)
