Giving to Others in This Season of Light

Since the beginning of the school year, BFS students, teachers and families have been generous with their time and resources to help those in need, to care for the environment, and to become advocates for important causes. In just three months, the school community participated in Trick or Treat for UNICEF, a “Penny Harvest” to aid charities working with children, a backpack drive and Walkathon for Katrina families, gardening at Cadman Plaza Park, and a holiday toy and gift drive for the children at St. John’s Place Family Center in Crown Heights. On December 6, the Upper School student body learned about several opportunities for service with five organizations: Helen Keller Services for the Blind, Legal Outreach, Citizens’ Committee for the Children of New York, and Amnesty International USA. (See a PDF of service opportunities for high school students at these organizations.)

In addition, the Community Service Committee of the PAT has compiled a list of several local service groups that are providing holiday volunteer opportunities for BFS students and families. Here are the details:

• The Brooklyn Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends
