“Under Construction”: BFS Renovations Update

While our families and faculty were enjoying their summers, many people were working hard to complete the renovation of key areas in our building in time for all of our students’ return in September.

Science Laboratories

The science labs underwent a reconfiguration and renovation to reflect the way that science is taught in the 21st century. New modern work stations were created which will help facilitate group projects, teacher interaction, and the use of laptops. In addition, all science spaces are outfitted with smart boards.

Middle and Upper School Library and Media Center

The library has been expanded and reconfigured to become an information and media center that functions as a learning hub for our Middle and Upper School students. The improved space accommodates a seminar room for classes to be taught, a reading lounge area, group study areas, additional computers, a large conference room and a faculty work room.

Rooftop Playground

The Charles A. Leeds, Jr. Rooftop Playground features a new surface and entirely new equipment that Pre- and Lower School children can safely use for climbing, sliding, crawling, free play, and organized games.

Meeting House/Theater (completion date TBD)

This space is among the most important and utilized areas in the school. After renovation, the Meeting House will reflect today’s standards for a multi-purpose space for Quaker Meeting, performing arts productions, award ceremonies, student assemblies, and parent events. Building the Community: The Campaign for Brooklyn Friends will allow the school to complete all of the proposed renovations: enlarging the space, making it wheelchair accessible and increasing seating capacity from 280 to 350; refurbishing existing benches, purchasing new seating and adding cushions; installing an acoustically efficient air conditioning system; updating the electric wiring system, purchasing new stage lighting fixtures and accessories, new rigging and new stage flooring; and enhancing the lighting and sound production booth. These changes will not only be a great boon to the educational program, they will significantly improve audience comfort.

Additional Renovations

Renovation plans also include infrastructure enhancements throughout the building including ventilation, wiring and electricity and emergency systems.

All of the upgrades and improvements to the building will enhance the overall educational program and enable us to offer more electives and a broader program during the academic year.
