A Day Like No Other—BFS Crafts Fair ETC. on December 9

Fasten your seatbelts for an all-day community extravaganza on Saturday, December 9. Four events, headlined by the 27th annual Brooklyn Friends School Crafts Fair, are converging on the Pearl Street campus that day to raise funds for school programs, provide holiday gifts for families in need, showcase the musical talents of BFS students, and give everyone myriad opportunities to celebrate the upcoming holiday season and have tons of fun.

CRAFTS FAIR

If you’re making your list and checking it twice, come to the Crafts Fair for one-stop shopping. Vendors offering everything from handmade clothing and jewelry to pottery, spa products and festive horticulture will sell their wares from 10 am to 5 pm in the lobby and lower gym. Many BFS classes are making special crafts for sale at the event, and refreshments—including decorate-your-own cupcakes—will be on sale in the cafeteria.

Several BFS faculty members are participating in the Crafts Fair. Janet Villas, Science Department Chair, will sell her newly released CD, “A Christmas Card,” which was inspired by the annual all-school Holiday Sing. Visual Arts teacher Ellen Kahan will offer a wide range of decorative and utilitarian ceramics and pottery. Mme. Marie-Christine Perry (below), knitter extraordinaire, will host a knitting booth with baby gifts, flowered pins, and homespun yarn for sale and will also present a spinning demonstration. Preschool Administrative Assistant Ginny Terry will sell hats, decoupage boxes and ceramic plates and platters. A table of child-created crafts from our youngest BFS students will also be featured at the fair.

WINTERFEST CARNIVAL GAMES FOR KIDS

From 11 am to 2 pm, the upper gym will come alive with fun games and activities, including face-painting, sand and spin art, ring toss and the ever-popular Moonwalk. Please note that Winterfest’s hours are shorter than those of the Crafts Fair, so if your children want to participate in the Moonwalk and other games, make sure you don’t come too late.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

Our yearly in-house bookstore returns, this year to the renovated 3rd floor library from 10 am to 5 pm. Come scope out this year’s great offerings of books for all ages, software and gift items, and know that a portion of your purchase benefits our children’s educational program. The book fair continues the following week, December 11 through 15, from 8 am to 5 pm. This year at the book fair, BFS families can help their children’s classroom and the library increase their collections with gift certificates that teachers can redeem for items at the fair. MUSIC CONCERT

This annual concert is a wonderful opportunity to see our middle and upper school students shine. All performances are in the Meeting House:

11 am, Orchestra, directed by Elvira Sullivan;
12:30 pm, Chorus, directed by Neil Ginsberg
2 pm, Jazz Band, directed by Jessica Jones

GIFT WRAPPING FOR ST. JOHNS PLACE FAMILY CENTER

December 9 also is the time when volunteers wrap the gifts our 6th grade students have collected for the families at the St. Johns Place Family Center in Crown Heights. Our sixth graders visit with the children at the Center throughout the year as part of their community service program. The toy and gift drive runs through December 8 and the following items are needed and may be dropped off in boxes in the Pearl Street lobby: NEW, unwrapped toys and gifts for toddlers (ages 1 through 3) and teenagers (ages 12+). The gifts should cost around $15 to $20 and should be in their original packaging.
