Summer is a special time in a child’s life. At Brooklyn Friends
Summer Camp, young campers experience a variety of classes, activities
and field trips designed to cultivate individual interests and talents.
In our safe, nurturing environment, both individual expression and
respect for others are encouraged, and lasting friendships are made.
We look forward to sharing this summer with your family.
Summer Camp programming at BFS is specialized according to age group.
Here is a description of the anticipated programming for the summer
of 2008. (Note: Specialty classes, in-house visitors and field trips

Brooklyn Friends Family Center Camp
Family Center Camp is open to children who have some experience in
a group learning environment.
BFS Family Center Camp offers our youngest campers (age 2) a relaxed
camp experience. Their days are designed by skillful preschool teachers
to provide a balance between structured activities, free play, and
rest. In our safe, caring environment children interact with friends,
create art, listen to stories, and play with materials that enhance
their skills. Family Center children will also splish and splash in
the wading pools on the rooftop playground. Each Friday, Family Center
campers will have a music and movement class, led by an experienced
Music Together instructor.
Brooklyn Friends Preschool Summer Camp
Preschool Summer Camp is appropriate for 3 and 4 year-olds who have
had one year of preschool and will be attending preschool in the fall
of 2008. Children must be toilet trained.
BFS Preschool Summer Camp offers preschool campers a nurturing environment
in which to enjoy their summer days with friends. Our caring, experienced
teachers encourage creativity, individual expression, and positive
social interaction through activities ranging from painting, drawing
and collage, to gardening and cooking, to storytelling, free, and dramatic
play. Hot summer days are punctuated by daily visits to the rooftop
playground where children cool off in our wading pools and sprinklers.
Our preschool campers also enjoy weekly specialty classes including
tennis, music & movement, hands-on science, and yoga. In addition
to everyday fun and specialized classes, our preschool campers will
also receive a special visitor in their classroom each Friday. Visitors
will include clowns, music makers, magicians, story weavers, and puppeteers.
Brooklyn Friends K-2 Summer Camp
K-2 Camp is appropriate for children who are entering Kindergarten,
First or Second grade in the fall of 2007.
BFS K-2 Summer Camp offers our oldest campers an enriching experience

positive social interaction. Specialty classes and activities will
include Art, Science, Group Games, Cooking, Swimming, Tennis, Gardening,
Music, and Movement. Ample time will also be given for free play in
the classroom and on the rooftop playground.
Every Monday, K-2 campers will travel to Brooklyn Bridge Park for
an afternoon of outdoor fun. On Fridays, K-2 campers will take field
trips to exciting city destinations like the Transit Museum, Melody
Lanes, New York Hall of Science, Queens County Farm, and The Central
Park Zoo. The last day of Summer Camp, all campers—regardless
of the session attended—will be invited to join us for a special
camp visitor and group lunch in the cafeteria.

SUMMER
ARTS ’08
Ages 8-12
THE PROGRAM
Summer Arts at Brooklyn Friends School is a unique opportunity
for children who will be entering grades 3 through 7 in September 2008.
The program offers a diverse and exciting art experience taught by
working and exhibiting artists from the New York City area. The instructors
of the Summer Arts Program are selected for their artistic and professional
accomplishments, as well as their experience working with children.
Under the care and guidance of our staff, children explore their creativity
and artistic abilities through an enriched interdisciplinary program.
In addition to participating in all classes offered in each session,
students enrolled in Summer Arts go on field trips to the city’s
many world-class arts and cultural institutions. The field trips include
outings to major museums, special exhibitions and to the art studios
of professional artists.
Students participate in recreational swimming two times a week at
the Marriott Hotel pool, located 1/2 block from the school and they
can play in two fully equipped gyms and on the rooftop playground at
BFS. In addition to supervised daily free play periods, students participate
in organized “ New Games” scheduled throughout the sessions.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Session 1
June 18–July 11 (closed July 4th)
Let’s run away with the circus!
Sculpture—The inspiration for this class will
come from artists who used the imagery of the circus in their art such
as Calder, Picasso, Degas, Seurat and Lautrec. Students will work with
a variety of materials including wire, clay and paper mache to create
their favorite circus animal or performer to be incorporated into our “big
top”.
As part of the process, students explore concepts of action, gesture
and proportion.
Musique de Tony—Lyrics, rhythm, harmony and
melody- these are the elements that students explore when learning
about the process of songwriting. In a fun and lively group setting
and through playing and singing together, students develop their own
musical ideas and songs.
Printmaking—Tightrope walkers, elephants, jugglers, acrobats and
so much more will be the imagery that students work with to create
giant circus prints. For inspiration, students will look at old circus
posters and European and American artists to understand and incorporate
the excitement of the circus into their work. Students will learn collagraph
techniques as well as styrofoam etching and stamp-making to create
these magnificent prints.
Wildly Wonderful Wearable Art—Working with an array of materials,
each student creates a unique piece of art that they will actually
be able to wear! Inspiration comes from our study of circus animals,
performers, and the ceremonial costumes of Native American, African,
Asian and South American cultures.
Session 2
July 14–Aug 1
Mixed Media Sculpture—Students create their art inspired
by found objects, personal items and a myriad of art materials. We
will explore the work of several artists in this medium, including
Picasso, Joseph Cornell and the Ghanaian artist El Anatsui. We will
take a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to view his newly installed
work. As part of the process, students will paint and draw from observation
and explore the concept of symbolism in art.
Spoken Word/Hip Hop—In a fun and supportive atmosphere, students
learn the basic elements of Hip-Hop song writing, performance, and
visual arts. Using William Shakespeare as a source of inspiration and
through playing, singing and listening exercises they find their "flow" and
are encouraged to express themselves creatively. Students also explore
various rhyming techniques that will be used in their rap lyrics and
poems. To complement their songs, students’ use a variety of
materials to create Hip-Hop based artworks.
Woodworking—In the school’s fully equipped woodshop,
students incorporate basic design, measuring, sawing, hammering and
3-D problem solving techniques to create their work of art. Supervised
and guided by BFS’s expert woodworking teacher, the students
learn about the tools that will help them realize their ideas in a
safe and creative way.
Cel-Animation—From pencil test to edited project, students learn
the FUNdamental steps of the animation process in the BFS digital media
lab. Utilizing a digital drawing tablet and computer animation software,
students will draw and paint backgrounds and characters to animate.
No experience required. Just a little patience, determination and creativity!
