Write On!

Brooklyn Friends School has three literary journals in which the creative writing of students from every division is represented. Expressing oneself through writing begins early at Brooklyn Friends, with children in the family center and preschool classes collaborating on poems for Write Now, the poetry anthology of the preschool and lower school. As children progress through the lower school grades, their writing becomes more sophisticated. In this year’s Write Now, for example, a fourth grade class wrote odes to everyday things in the style of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda

Scribe, the middle school’s literary magazine, is edited by students in the eighth grade creative writing class and welcomes submissions from students in all grades. Wordflirt, the upper school magazine, has an editorial staff that meets regularly during and after school hours. Both Scribe and Wordflirt present poetry, short stories, and other writing styles as well as student artwork. PDF files of this year's literary journals are now online on the publications page.

To request a printed copy of any or all of these student publications, send an e-mail to info [at] brooklyn friends [dot]org.

from Write Now:

Summer Has Come

Flowing, flapping water
Sailors sitting softly
Shiny sun in the summer
Chocolate melting
Kids licking ice cream
Summer has come at last!
