Celebrating the Joys of
Science in the New Lower School Lab
A long-held dream came true this fall, when the Lower School opened
a new science laboratory on the fifth floor, complete with a resident
science specialist, Megan Dunphy Gottlieb. Located in a sun-filled
corner classroom, the 500-square foot space is all about science
and represents a dedicated space for scientific inquiry and experimentation.
Third and fourth graders visit the lab weekly in half groups, and
time in the lab is also scheduled regularly for kindergarten, first,
and second grade students. Teaching and learning in the lab supplements
the thorough science education our Lower School students receive
in life science, physical science and earth science. Early science
experiences have been shown to develop students’ problem-solving
skills and empower them to participate in an increasingly scientific
and technological world.
Lower school families had the opportunity to attend a morning or
an evening “lab open house” in October. They were greeted
by Head of School Michael Nill and Lower School
Head Jackie
Condie,
and were treated to a special PowerPoint presentation by Science
Specialist Megan Dunphy Gottlieb. The
presentation can be viewed here (QuickTime movie); please allow
time for the file to load and then click on each slide image to advance
the presentation.
