Stepping Up to the Plate:
Student Senate Holds Inauguration Ceremony
The Upper School celebrated the qualities of leadership, integrity
and pride and officially introduced the 12 Student Senate leaders
at an Inauguration Ceremony held on October 23 in the Meeting House.
Upper School Head Roxanne Zazzaro, the first speaker, described
the five qualities she has observed in the 2007-2008 student senators:
respect, selflessness, empowered by their initiative, a striving
to achieve the goals of the school, and serving as an inspiration
to others by positive example. She then gave a charge to the Senate
as the representative voice of the student body and the senators
recited their oath of service.
Senate faculty advisors Sergei Mikhelson and Lyubov
Obertnaya also
participated in the ceremony, presenting certificates and T-shirts
to each of the student leaders. Student Senate President John
Vielot concluded the proceedings with a speech. He took note of the 100th
anniversary of the Upper School and talked about the many advancements
and progress the school has made recently. “The Senate is the
vehicle to get your ideas out and your voices heard,” said
John. He also pointed out that work on the Senate helps students
focus on their strengths and leadership abilities, learn how to find
balance in life, and work collaboratively with others.
Composed of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and
the president and senator of each grade, the Senate works with faculty
and administration to address student needs and make general improvements
within the school. The Senate also coordinates student clubs and
activities that meet weekly.
