Checking In with Afterschool

The BFS Afterschool program has enjoyed a fun-filled fall. In addition to providing quality enrichment courses and a safe environment for our students, we strive to offer a wide range of classes that reflect the diversity of BFS as well as the larger Brooklyn community. This is perhaps most apparent in our selection of movement and music classes. On any given day, children can don a tutu for ballet, learn rhythms on drums from Ghana, tap their toes, sing a Broadway tune, write their own rhymes, or move to a hip hop beat.

This fall we began our first specialty class for preschoolers, Music and Movement with Renee. Taught by singer, dancer, musician and teacher Renee Skuba, this class is a great and convenient way to introduce our youngest students to enrichment courses. Meanwhile, we have included an additional technology-based class, Photoshop, for middle schoolers. Moving forward, we are committed to exploring ways to broaden the scope of our programming to include additional offerings specifically geared toward preschool and middle school children.

Registration for the Winter and Spring 2008 term has now begundownload a brochure and registration form. Registration and deposits are due by Monday, December 17, 2007.

One of the new courses for the next term is “Mad Science” for students in grades Kindergarten through 5. This course is presented by the Mad Science organization and features hands-on activities, amazing demonstrations, and fun take-homes. Topics will include Planets and Moons, Atmosphere and Beyond, Space Phenomena, Sun and Stars, Rocket Science, Watts Up, Optical Illusions, Magnetic Magic, Lights…Color…Action, and Harnessing Heat.

Other popular continuing courses for the winter and spring are Cooking, Robofun, Penciltopia, Wizardry, Yoga, Chess, Woodworking, Book and Film Clubs, Knitting, and Ceramics. Action-loving and sports-minded students may wish to register for Tennis, Running Club, Super Soccer Stars, or Double Dutch. Performing arts classes include Tap Dance, Jazz Dance, Hip Hop Dance, West African Drumming, Music Stories, Musical Theater, Magic Forest, and Hip Hop Spoken Word and Art. French and Spanish classes are open to children in Kindergarten through grade 4.

We encourage parent feedback and suggestions for our program. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch with Afterschool Director Taunya Black, 718-852-1029.
