The
Greening of BFS
by Joan Martin
The
PAT (Parent and Teacher Association)
began its annual Speakers Series for 2007-2008 on a decidedly green
note. Josh Dorfman (photos), an entrepreneur, radio host and author
of The
Lazy Environmentalist, advised
a group of parents and faculty on practical and easy ways to shift
their thinking and habits to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.
“I
want to help people make green choices because it’s awesome,” he
told the meeting house audience on October 23. “Green living
has become stylish and convenient, with solutions grounded in reality,
not guilt.” The
founder and owner of Vivavi, an eco-friendly furniture and home design
center based in Brooklyn, Josh led a presentation and discussion
that covered topics from cars, energy, food and farming, to biodiversity
and water supply. The biggest water waster? Toilets. The solution:
a basic plumbing system that channels used sink water to flush your
toilet.
Josh also
spoke about initiatives that provide incentives for consumer recycling.
ReycleBank provides homes in Philadelphia and Wilmington with a barcoded garbage
container into which all trash recyclables can be thrown. Homeowners earn RecycleBank
dollars for the amount they’ve recycled, which can then be redeemed at
such stores as Starbucks, Staples, Whole Foods, and Home Depot. “It’s
a recycling solution that not only simplifies, but actually pays you to do the
right thing,” he said.
BFS families
were clearly taken with Josh’s green solutions and seemed eager
to pass the message along to their children. PAT Co-President Toukie
Smith even suggested a series of shows on Josh’s radio program
that would be geared to children and teens. Stay tuned!
