Join Us on March 4th for an Amazing Event

The third annual Saint Baldrick’s/Locks of Love event, organized by the P.E.A.C.E. committee, is right around the corner!  In past years, the event has taken place during a school assembly.  This year, we are hosting the event from 6pm-8pm on Friday, March 4th in the Upper Gym. Since we started the event we have collectively raised $14,113, $12,665 of which was raised last year alone.  So far, we have 15 participants, including three teachers!  Students, parents and teachers are encouraged to attend and participate!

Saint Baldrick’s and Locks of Love are organizations that benefit childhood cancer research.  Saint Baldrick’s “shavees” shave their heads to show solidarity with children who battle cancer, and receive pledges from friends and family members to do so.  Locks of Love participants cut ten or more inches of their hair, which is then made into hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children who lose their hair to chemotherapy or alopecia. Students, parents and teachers are all invited to get their heads shaved or their hair cut by professionals at this event.

In addition, student groups will be providing musical and visual entertainment. Food and beverages will be sold.  Come and support the Brooklyn Friends School community while making a difference in battling childhood cancer.  Don’t miss this exciting event that embodies the Brooklyn Friends School spirit!

Cell Phone Drive Now Underway

Have an old cell phone you don’t use?  How about an outdated pager, ipod, blackberry or palm pilot?  If so, the 12th grade Environmental Science class needs you!  We are conducting a cell phone/ handheld devices drive.  Your cell phones/handheld devices will be donated to TERRACYCLE. This organization will in turn make a donation to The Nature Conservancy on behalf of BFS.  Any old device is acceptable with or without a charger. Our goal is to collect 200 devices by February 1st. Look for the collection boxes around the building.  Read more.

Thank You Letter to the Fall Clean-Up Volunteers

Posted 12.1.10

Dear Allegra, Tania and Joan and all the BFS Volunteers,

I was amazed at the participation, energy and good spirits of the BFS families who came to work in the Quaker Cemetery two weeks ago. When you all left, the cemetery, in autumn, had never before looked so well cared for. It was a pleasure working with you. If you have a way of thanking the students and parents who came, please give them my heartfelt thanks.

It was a beautiful day and I think everyone enjoyed being together. The lunch you provided was impressive and delicious. The hundreds of daffodil bulbs were also greatly appreciated. I will never forget the group of little girls who were planting bulbs, but lost all interest in doing so when they discovered worms in the soil. From then on they were busy digging for worms. Thanks for all the planning and effort that went into all you did.

I look forward to working with you again next fall. And if you want to come by and see the fruits of you labor, we are having a spring work and visiting day on April 2, 2011. The daffodils should be in full bloom.  You will be able to see all those we planted near the front gate and the upper meadow, as well as those bulbs, which you gave us and which were planted by Mary McDowell Middle School students, in the section to the far left of the front gate. Do stop by and enjoy the beauty you have helped to create.

In Friendship,
Mary Doty
