LISTEN, LEARN, DISCUSS
As part of the PAT's African American Celebration, screenings of BLACK IN LATIN AMERICA, the acclaimed PBS series presented by Professor Henry Louis Gates, will take place in the BFS library from Monday through Thursday this week, at 3:30 pm and 6 pm. Each episode is an hour long and will be followed by a group discussion. Read more about the Feb. 3rd Celebration here and in the PAT section below.

Upper School students are excited to perform an overlooked comedy, THE ROVER by Aphra Behn, one of England's first female playwrights who happened to be a spy and a feminist. TONIGHT AND SATURDAY at 7 PM.

African American Celebration: Celebrate and Volunteer!
Please join us for the February 3rd African-American Celebration, which focuses on the Afro-Latino Experience.
* Week of: Screenings of Henry Louis Gates' "Black in Latin America" at 3:30 and 6:00pm, discussions following each screening
* Tickets for the event are available in the lobby.
Your ticket includes: capoeira! dinner! performances! and a show by
special guests Folklore Urbano!
* Volunteers are still needed to sell tickets, lead post-screening discussions and help with the celebration itself. It's easy to sign up.
Spring Gala: Silent Auction Items Needed
Goal: Success with your support of the Spring Gala!
How? Offer donations to our Silent Auction!
Examples
of past silent auction items include: restaurant gift certificates,
admission to cultural experiences, tickets to shows or sporting events,
vacation homes, items from retailers or designers, culinary offerings.
All donations can be brought or sent to the Development Office located

Book Covering Party in the Library! Wed. February 1
Donate
15 minutes or 2 hours assisting Kathy and Melissa in the library. We
have many beautiful new books that need covering so they can be ready
for check-out by our kids! Please join The Friends of the Library
Wednesday, February 1 for a Book Covering Party anytime between 8-10am.

March 12 Embracing Diversity Event to Focus on Bayard Rustin

about Bayard Rustin, civil rights leader, African American, birthright
Quaker and openly gay man in an era of fierce homophobia.
4.5 million Americans benefit from life-saving blood transfusions each year.
Donate a little to help a lot. Last year we had an all-time low for
blood donation. Mark the calendar on March 15 for this year's blood
drive.

and donate them to the BFS library! The PAT is hosting a Used Book Sale
in May, and we need your books. Donations will be accepted starting in
April!

SCHOOL NEWS YOU CAN USE
Get Ready for Reading: Don't miss the "Rhymes and Reasons" Preschool and Kindergarten workshop with reading specialist Barbara RIngel on Thurs. Feb. 2, 9 to 10 am in the third floor conference room. Language
play is widely believed to be an essential preliminary ingredient in
paving the way for a successful experience in reading. The workshop will
explore the concept of phonemic awareness
and will include a variety of practical activities for school and home
that will enhance a child's ability to play with language.
Register Now for Spring Camp (And Get a Jump on Summer Camp, Too!)
Forms for the Afterschool Program's Spring Camp (March 19-23 for preschool through grade 4) are here.
Enrollment is on a first-come, first serve basis. Program Descriptions
and Registration Forms for Summer Camp and Summer Arts are now on the BFS website. Register by March 5th and receive a $50 discount, which will be applied to your camp tuition balance.
Kindergarten Coffee Hour takes place on Monday, Jan. 30 at 8:30 am
in the Cafeteria (section opposite the kitchen). We'll check in with
one another and talk about developmental changes and challenges typical
for the grade. More coffee hour dates are on the Lower School Parent Portal.
Expert to Speak on Transracial Adoption, Identity, and Empowerment
On Tues. Feb. 7, 5 to 7pm, all members of the BFS community
are invited to a workshop with Professor John Palmer of Colgate
University. He is the author of Dance of Identities, Korean Adoptees and Their Journey Toward Empowerment.
Himself a Korean adoptee, Professor Palmer will be visiting BFS on Feb.
7 and 8, meeting with students, faculty and staff, and presenting at
assemblies for middle and upper school students. Go here for his workshop descriptions.

SPORTS SECTION
Athletic schedules for all teams and all seasons are on the school website. We encourage parents and students (13 and over) to register with highschoolsports.net to get free e-mail updates whenever games or practices are canceled, postponed, or changed.

Read about the amazing victories our basketball teams achieved this past week on the BFS website.
And don't miss out on catching a basketball home game in our lower gym
-- there are 6 teams and a game is played almost every day; stop by to
cheer on our teams, or travel with our indoor track athletes as they
represent BFS interscholastically. All schedules are here.
LATE
BREAKING NEWS: The JV Boys Basketball team beat Packer 41-38 on Friday
evening. They came from behind after trailing 18-13 at the half. Packer
came into the game undefeated in league play. It was great win for the
team and a big win for the program. Congrats to coach Will Watkins '05
and the entire team.
The Boys & Girls Varsity
Basketball Teams will have the opportunity to take the court at St.
Francis College next week as the Girls take on league rival Churchill
at 4pm on Wednesday and the Boys take on non-league opponent Calhoun at
4:15pm on Thursday. Blue Pride!!

The BFS Friendly Flyers Youth Running Club
participated in a meet at the Park Slope Armory last Saturday 1/21/12
from 5:00pm-10:00pm; it was a phenomenal meet with phenomenal results. Congratulations to all the runners and their Coach, Karen Robinson.
Learning from a Sports Legend: Guest Speaker Sue Wicks
(photo at right) stopped by on Monday 1/23/12 to talk to and work with
our Girls Basketball Program (MS Girls, JV Girls, and Varsity Girls
Basketball Teams) at Practice and to run them through some activities
and drills in the upper gym. A great time was had by all who
participated.
Spring is in the air: The BFS Spring Season will kick off on Fri. 2/24/12 with US Team Meetings Afterschool. Go here for starting dates for our spring softball, baseball, track and volleyball teams.

QUAKER NEWS
Save the Dates: By happy coincidence, the annual "Embracing Diversity" event sponsored by the BFS PAT on Monday, March 12, and a special event at 15th Street Monthly Meeting in NY on Thursday, March 15, will focus on the life and legacy of civil rights leader and Quaker Bayard Rustin (1912-1987). The Embracing Diversity event to be held at BFS will be a screening and panel discussion of the film, Brother Outsider. The 15th Street Meeting event honors Bayard Rustin's 100th anniversary with a reading of a soon to be published book I Must Resist: Bayard Rustin's Life In Letters,
edited by Michael Long. The PAT Diversity Committee is coordinating
the Embracing Diversity event on March 15, and the BFS Quaker Self Study
Committee will work to engage the entire BFS community in both events.
Interested volunteers for these events are asked to send an e-mail indicating interest and a volunteer leader will get back to you.
