Starting in third grade, BFS students take part in overnight trips designed to enhance both academic and social skills.
Third and fourth graders celebrate the completion of their academic year with a three-day trip to Clearpool Outdoor Education Center in Carmel, New York.
Fifth and sixth graders spend three days during the winter in the Catskill Mountains at the Frost Valley Environmental Center exploring nature, participating in trust- and community-building exercises, and engaging in winter recreational activities.
Seventh graders travel to Philadelphia as an integral part of their study of United States History, visiting important national monuments and museums to deepen their understanding of our democratic traditions. Eighth graders start the year off with a trip to establish group and individual goals with a focus on leadership at the Clearpool Education Center in Carmel, NY. The eighth grade class also takes a four-day science trip in the spring to Cape Cod, an experience that represents the culmination of their year-long study of Earth Science.
Ninth graders go on a retreat to Powell House, a Quaker conference and retreat center in Old Chatham, NY. Ninth graders also typically make an overnight visit through the Partnership for the Homeless' Youth Service Opportunities Project (YSOP) to work in soup kitchens and homeless shelters in the city. Sophomores make an overnight trip to Camp Jewell YMCA in Connecticut, and juniors go on a retreat and college visit trip every spring to a city in the Northeast. BFS seniors begin the school year with a trip to Powell House, a Quaker retreat and conference center in Old Chatham, NY.
