A Quaker School

The Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, has a long history of involvement in education. In addition to the establishment of their own schools, Quakers were instrumental in the development of public schools and took the lead in the education of girls, freed slaves, and Native Americans.

Their central conviction of “That of God” or “The Light” in everyone gave rise to a genuine respect for the intrinsic worth of all people. This belief, and flowing from it, the Quaker testimonies of equality, integrity, peaceful resolution of conflict, community and simplicity, continue to provide the foundation for an education where children’s moral development is an integral part of their social and academic growth. In addition to an innovative and challenging academic program, Friends schools promote social conscience and a sense of social responsibility. Students are encouraged to value people of all backgrounds, to be courageous in standing up for their convictions, and to become responsible members of the larger community.

Quaker Meeting
Each week, a Friends school community gathers for Quaker Meeting. The form of the meeting is simple. Each person having with him or herself the ability to discern the truth, Friends worship silently, waiting upon the spirit. Students and teachers are encouraged to speak from their hearts, if so moved. The unstructured nature of Quaker Meeting, with its focus on the power of the gathered group, gives everyone, regardless of a particular faith, a powerful tool for spiritual growth. They are asked to turn to their Inner Light for guidance in living their lives. Quaker Meeting makes explicit the connection between the inward and outward life that is unique in Quaker education.

Brooklyn Monthly Meeting Community Dinner

On the last Sunday of every month, Brooklyn Monthly Meeting (BMM) of the Religious Society of Friends holds its monthly community dinner for people in need, at the meetinghouse (110 Schermerhorn Street). BFS families are always welcome to donate food or volunteer to help. Sunday is when the bulk of our work happens: (1pm - set up and food prep, 3pm - our meal is served, 4:30pm - clean up. We often need help at the end!) We always welcome donations of clean, seasonal, gently used clothing. Adult clothing is in higher demand than children's clothing and more men attend than women. But if you drop it off, we'll find a good home for it. Location: 110 Schermerhorn Street. For more info, please contact BMM volunteer Andres Colapinto.
